Ok to start out I want everyone to know that the only thing I know about roaches is they will be here long after we are gone.

What I want to know is. Why does everyone get huffy puffy about Tarantula Hybrids and not about roach Hybrids? Like I said I know Little to nothing about roaches. I am just wondering if there is some reason that its ok to Sell Hybrid roaches but not hybrid tarantulas.

Can someone enlighten me?

It's a matter of opinion, nothing is wrong with hybrids, unless your looking for pure species and not mixed.

Don't they sell hybrid tarantulas in Europe? I know they sell some different fish hybrids at the pet store. Usually the person who creates a hybrid let's people know but the person who made the hybrid Blaberus didn't even notice before sending them out to tons of people. Here's an interesting thread on a different type of roach hybrid that hasn't gone anywhere. WARNING, Don't put your G.portentosa...

All I know is there are a lot of people that get high blood pressure when someone drops the "H" Bomb while talking about Tarantulas. If its not right to do with 1 Animal then why is It Ok to another.

I would think that hybridization of feeder roaches could be beneficial. How many times do you see people listing three characteristics they want in a feeder, and all anyone can suggest is that they eliminate one of their desired characteristics, because there isn't a roach that meets them all? I think it could be beneficial to create a hybrid that doesn't burrow, doesn't fly, can't climb very well, etc. Of course, it all needs to be very controlled, because it could get out of hand and then we'd have mutant roaches running rampant through the streets.

The reason people get so upset about hybrids is that once it's done it's hard to trust that the species you are buying is really what you think it is. I'm not really a bug guy but there are certain closely related snakes where one species is worth about $1000+ and another is worth $50 or $100 (diamond pythons and carpet pythons). Once people start hybridizing them you become very wary about laying down a couple of grand for a pair of "diamond pythons" from an unknown source especially after a couple of generations where people lose track of the genetic integrity of the animals.
I suppose this applies to t's also where a very hard to obtain species could be crossed with a very common and easily bred species and pretty soon all you can find is mutts.
Probably the reason people don't get too concerned with roaches is that 95% of people who keep them are just breeding them as food for other animals and want the best feeder for their animals . I suppose the 5% who keep roaches as their hobby would get pretty upset with hybrids. I've read many posts of people trying to buy true death heads only to breed them and find out that had bought mutts instead of a pure species.

I HATE HYBRIDS. Though it can be an interesting experiment to see if one can be created between two species, the viable results of such an experiment should be destroyed immediately without predjudice. HYBRID = BAD. But then again, I am a species purist when it comes to roaches....

Oh did I mention: I HATE HYBRIDS !!! :embarrassed:

Unfortunately there are alot of mutts being produced in the herp and fish community, not sure about inverts though.
