I recently got to wondering what levels the roach keeping community keep their various feeder species at. ie How big - or small - are your collections, if you estimate them today??!
would have had more but my main colony crashed. i was keeping it at a petstore and overwatered on accident. it somehow became fairly massive amounts of ammonia which turns out to be fairly poisonous to bugs
Well over 2500, with eight different species to choose from. The B.giganteous is the best feeders for large adults' while the B.dubia nymphs work best for slings.
I've probably got close to 200 but I doubt I've any more than that. I just got a starter colony of about 100 maybe...4 months ago, so it'll be another few months before I have enough to begin feeding. I feed a medium one off every now and then because my tarantulas absolutely love them. I have noticed that some of my original larger ones are now adult and making babies of their own!!!
Yeah Truff!!  Glad to hear that the colony is taking off for you! I just knew you'd be a good bug mommy!
As for deciding when you have a viable colony for feeding your T's...well - you really need to take a look at how many and what size T's you're feeding.
Most of us who have over the 2500 mark are feeding very large collections.
My P. pallida colony has just become viable to feed from, but I hit a setback ~ I thought the purple/brown ones were the females, and the winged ones were all males, and I've feed off scores of females in error! Damn!
