My horse Scout had to be euthanized this morning after he was attacked by another horse, and his knee was broken. He was living on my aunts farm, and her grooms released this crazy horse into the paddock with him. The crazy horse pinned him in the corner of the paddock, and proceeded to kick the shit out of him. We buried him on the ranch this afternoon. Im really upset and angry about the whole thing, because the crazy horse should never have been allowed in with him. Truth be told, that crazy horse should have been euthanized months ago, its savaged two people, a dog, and half a dozen other horses. And my aunts grooms are worthless, they just sat their and watched as that horse killed mine.

Anyway, here are some pictures of Scout bean. Ive had him since I was 14. Hes a retired racehorse, and was my show horse. Weve been through hell together, and Im really going to miss him.

Hes the bay trotting away from the camera.

I found this poem a moment ago, and thought Id share it. I know there are other horse lovers on the boards, and may they also turn to this poem in their time of loss. There is nothing quite like losing a beloved horse.

Remember Me

When you hear the thunder
remember me
for those are my hoofbeats
upon your heart
deep in the night.

Do not fear the lightning
and remember me
for my hooves strike sparks
so you may see
in your darkest hour.

And when the rain falls
remember me
for those are my tears of joy
as I run with the sky herd
free of rein and pain and heavy burden.

Look up and remember me
for you will see the shape of my
fiery head thrown high
among the clouds,
warmed by sun but even more
because you remember me.

I am very sad for your loss. If you would like to talk, I'm here. Being another horse person, I can relate to your loss, and I am so, so sorry it happened. I wish you the best.

The pictures of Scout really show a horse with a cute, bright personality. My favorite picture is the one with his eyes all squinty.

When I was 14, my oldest brother had a ranch with some horses. He had one, Big Red, that he had for 10 years. It was the best horse he ever had. I was working for him one summer, and was in charge of horse and burro care. Big Red started bleeding one day out of all the main orrifices. He sprung an internal bleed. He was going down quick and my brother could not stand to watch his fave horse in pain. There were no vets around so he had to do it the old fashioned way. I was there. It was very heartbreaking to watch such a majestic animal put down. My brother did not talk for a few days after that. I will always remember that day.

How horrible! Why haven't they euthanized this other horse? I can't imagine a horse being so mean and destructive. The whole thing is tragic. From one horse lover to another, my heart goes out to you. I know how difficult it is to lose a horse.

The horse doesnt belong to us. It was a boarder horse. I believe the people are going to attempt to have it rehabed. But IME, once a horse has attacked a person, its past the point of rehabilitation. I do hope that it works though, because its a shame to have to euthanize an animal because of a problem a human probably caused.

Awe man, that's really bad. Things like that are hard not to miss. I hear your frustration too with decisions people might have made that weren't the best. We want to turn back time sometimes. We just have to keep going on. It's a lot easier to say isn't it.

I am dearly sorry for your loss. And the circumstances in which this tradgedy has occurred is shocking. Sounds like the two of you have had a very long friendship - destined to be buddies for life. Although of course, I have never seen your horse in person, looking at those photos of him, I get a sense that he had a really nice, friendly nature.

How dreadful; I am so sorry for your loss :(
It sounds like your aunts' grooms need to be replaced with someone more qualified; have you spoken with her about this? I'd be infuriated if anyone put any of my animals with someone else's without asking my prior permission; that just isn't acceptable, particularly in a case like this. Perhaps I'm coming from a more litigous frame of mind, but I'd be going after the grooms financially, not because it would do anything to alleviate the sorrow but more because they deserve some kind of punishment to teach them not to ever do something like that again, and people feel it hardest in their wallets.
Furthermore, you aunt needs to seriously re-think how she organizes that boarding facility. A horse that aggressive needs to be labeled and segregated as part of policy; were your horse someone elses, that'd probably be very inclined to sue the boarding facility for the losses and other costs incurred (ie. the euthanasia). I personally am not a fan of euthanizing animals with a potential to be worked with just because they went after a human as I personally know two horses who severely harmed humans that are now therapeutic riding animals, but until rehabilitation has occurred it is utterly unacceptable to mix such an animal with general population. I could imagine someone being seriously hurt or worse trying to split up that fight if they were there when it happened.
This whole situation just screams more people and animals being hurt if this facility isn't run differently, soon.

I'm sorry for your loss. I used to ride at a stable and they lost a horse in a similar fashion. It wasn't overly aggressive horse that "attacked" but just one well-placed kick did him in. Though it wasn't my personal horse and I had only had the privilege of riding him for 3 years, it was still heartbreaking. I think the grooms should really be considered in continuing their employment there although you might be the type of person to just want the whole thing to end. I was that way when my exroommate's dog busted out of her crate and killed my dog. It was an accident on the dog's part but the owner should have properly secured her crate. I'm keeping the large vet bill receipt just in case
