Hey guys,

i've had this spider for about a month, rescued from an LPS for almost free as he wasnt doing too well. i noticed something odd this morning, humidity is high in his enclosure and there is what i believe MOLD on his knees. Its white fluffy and very thin. Should i be worried? Should i dry things out?

here is a pic

thank you!

I havent had much expirience with mold, since i keep all of my enclosures is clean as possible and remove and destroy any sign of mold before it has any chance to manifest. But in case of a rescue T i would probably try vinegar on q tips. Vinegar is a natural mild acid and should atleast nutralize the mold without hurting the T, i think there is also a suggestion in the TKG on how to deal with mold, i cant remember off the top of my head what page it would be but i am sure its in the index or not hard to find. Also i would try to induce a molt any which way i can so the T molts out of the infested exuviae.

how would i go about forcing the molt? I think he is in need of one and hopefully he will soon. Which vinegar should i use or shy away from? Don't want to take a risk haha. Sigh! hope he makes it through the next molt

I would use the very cheapest simplest vinegar that i could get from walmart the domestic one that comes clear white plastic container, dip a q tip in it and ever so gently dab the infected spots after that i would let it go for a day or 2 and watch for changes as far as forcing the molt goes just feed it a little extra and kick the temp up a lil. Keep the water bowl full but i wouldnt mist the enclosure since you are battling mold.

Rehousing often induces a molt, but from the bald spot on the abdomen, you can see one is not going to be soon.

I'm honestly baffled on how a tarantula could grow mold. What substrate did this house of wonders use? Also, "almost free" leaves room for them to buy more, if this one survives, I would suggest trying to teach the store about care of tarantulas.

I don't know your enclosure details, but you'll want LOTS of air flow while maintaining higher than normal house humidity. Good luck.
