Got a message from an exotic reptile rescue last week about some Ts that had been dumped off. The dude was like "We got 4, would you be interested in adopting”? I said hell yeah, I'll take em all. He was pretty happy to find them a home. I got the impression he wasn't quite sure what to do with them, lol.

Texted me a pic of a stack of those little sandwich containers with red lids you get from the dollar general, so I thought "Oh cool, slings. I'll get some boxes ready". Prepped 4 sling houses and went to get them saturday.

They were adults. In 6x4x2 tupperware containers. No sub, no water, and live crickets in with the Ts. The tubs were covered in a layer of grime and the interiors were completely webbed up. They had been in there for more than just transport. Whoever surrendered them had an adult OBT and an M. balfouri in those things, along with a P. sazimai and a GBB. The GBB was so ready to molt, it was almost black under the setae. It started laying a molt mat literal seconds after I got it into a proper tub and flipped over like 15 minutes later.

After a bit of running around to get some sterilite tubs and a couple bags of substrate/cork bark/etc, I had to rehouse a *very* angry OBT and balfouri, a surprisingly chill sazimai, and a very cooperative GBB.

Very happy to have these Ts in a better home, but I kinda wanna punch someone in the face over those tubs, lol.

Four beautiful T's you got there now.

Drives me nuts that anyone can treat an animal like that... Even if it's "just" a spider. 100% with you on someone needing a punch in the face.

Glad they have a better keeper now.

Glad these are with you now.

Whoever got them initially probably got them as slings or juvies and then got tired of doing basic maintenance once the novelty of having "pretty spiders" wore off.

I can't even fathom keeping an adult OBT in something that small. I popped the corner off in my bathtub and used 2 pairs of tongs to pull it all the way off and it went straight into "I'M READY TO RUMBLE!" pose. Fangs out, dripping venom. It then would *not* let go of the web mat in the container and go into the catch cup. It's a little smaller than the others, so I put it in a medium critter keeper, which will sit on my PC desk until it's quarantine is over. Every time I bump the desk, it throws a threat pose at me, lol. I can almost hear it yelling "THIS IS MY DESK NOW!"

Kudos to you for taking those beautiful T’s in. And a pox upon the man (or woman) who kept those T’s that way. Those T’s are lucky to have gotten in with someone patient and respectful.

Well done! Those T's will be a heck of a lot happier now. It shocks me how people can be so ignorant and not do an ounce of research on how to care for a living animal, but it happens. A friend of mine rescued a juvenile LP that was kept in a huge deli cup with no substrate, no water, and had only been fed - and I kid you not - smoked ham. The picture she sent while on her way home showed a malnourished tarantula besides a square of ham. It would've been funny if it wasn't so sad and absurd. I have no idea how it even survived for as long as it did on a ham only diet. Fast forward a year and Hamlet is doing very well on his new non-pork diet, more substrate lifestyle.

I had to read that several times because I was sure you said someone was feeding an LP smoked ham...and I think I must have been slipped some hallucinogens because it still looks like you wrote smoked ham😳

Brined and smoked ham, sliced and ready to put between two slices of bread 🥪 ... or feed to your tarantula, apparently. I'll see if I can get permission to share the picture because it's almost a "have to see it to believe it" kind of thing.

Was there a pricey rehousing fee ? Spectacular spiders you scored and horrifying conditions they came in wow small plastic containers with literally nothing?? That’s worse than most pet shops …

Nope. Dude was just happy to hand them off. I donated 50 bucks to the rescue after I got them situated, but he just gave em to me. And I'm 99% sure he'll call me again if he gets Ts. I contacted him last year to see if he did them and he was like "We don't get them a lot, but I'll keep you in mind".

I'm torn between laughing and crying at the name Hamlet 😂 it almost feels bad, like a constant reminder of back in ol' Hamlets days when he lived on bits of ham and ain't nobody complained about that or the lack of privacy (from no substrate).

But seriously, that's simultaneously the best and worst name for little Hamlet. I think I love it?

Well you can't forget your roots now, can you? Even if those roots were awful and ham-shaped. I love Hamlet. 😍

Nice grab ! I'm sure all of those Ts appreciate the extra space to roam about and do their thing. I will never understand why so many can't commit fully to an animal which is easier to look after than most plants. It ain't rocket science last I checked.
