I have a golden trapdoor that i bought today, I made an artificial burrow for it and it has covered itself up in it, so hopefully it will make a trap door soon, i'll post a pic if it does.

Hey,

I just got an indonesian black trapdoor and I wanted to put it into a different kind of setup. I bought a tube of tennis balls. (donated the tennis balls to someone who has a dog) The pictures will speak for themselves. Mine wouldn't make his silk tube or door until I fed it. Maybe it needed the energy to do so. Can you see the door?

LOL, my thoughts exactly......Next stop is the sporting goods store.:)

What a good idea, they would even double over for smaller arboreals.

Thanks for the idea JesseD;)

here are the three i got, they are being kept in tall plastic cereal containers for now.

the first two pictures are of the biggest one. 3"

the third and fourth pictures is of the first small one. 2"

the fifth picture is the second small one. 2"

if you look at the 1st picture and the last(fifth) picture, the spiders are both next to the same size bottle cap and you can really see the size dif.

Mine is pretty tiny. Maybe a inche with the legs. The pic I posted on another thread isn't actually mine. That one is a bit bigger. Anyway I gotta share this other idea another buddy of mine has. I'm going away for the weekend so I'll post that stuff on Monday or somethin.

I don't have any pics, but what I did with mine was house her in a sweets jar with lots of substrate, about 7 or 8 inches of peat/vermiculite/sand mix. She burrowed after a couple of days and it went straight down to the bottom of the jar. These guys can't climb smooth surfaces so nasty as they may be I still had about an inch wide hole in the middle of the lid to ensure good ventilation. Don't forget the airflow, these are from pretty arid areas in the wild so about 65% humidity is good. Hope this helps, and don't get bitten!

I have a couple Q's on housing them too. My only experience keeping one ended badly. Couldn't get it to eat or burrow. Tried everything but no dice. It died. I'm sure it was just one of those times when the w/c's refuse to acclimate and since they're all w/c, I thought I should not repeat the disaster.
How common is this story? I'm considering giving it another go. They're too freakin awesome.

Anyone know of any trapdoor bite report resource? I'm curious as hell what the effects might be. It's best to treat them very carefully and of course we always hear they're maybe a bit more potent than average (whatever that is). Where some actual documentation. I did search already of course, finding nothing.

well mine are thriving, and one has begun to burrow all of them have eaten already, the way i feed mine is from advice given to me buy the person i bought em from(great guy btw) anyways just put the cricket in the forceps and since they are soo aggro they will strike at it and hold it until they realize its food and munch on it. yum. it has worked for me.

ive read and been told that they have potent venom, thats why i never get my hand or fingers near em, and be much more careful with them then anything else i know, although all my Ts im not to catious with them, cause i know there signals and signs and blah, but these guys wow are they unpredictable. just be careful, keep hands away.

It took mine quite a while to burrow, and when it finally did, it never came out... ever.

After several weeks of playing "fish-the-dead-cricket-out-of-the-enclosure", I dug the damn thing up to see if it was actually still alive. Oh, it was. After being dug up, it never again made as perfect a "Trap Door" kind of hole, but rather layed in shallow scrapes. It ate, alright, and it seemed to be doing well... until Mr. Kitty decided it was a new, attractive toy. Looked a lot like one of those snow globes gone wrong...

I bought what was labeled a "Black Trap Door" at last year's ATS conference from Chris Young, but it ended up being one of those Brachysomethingorother "Shiny Grey Tunneling Spider"... So far THAT has played trapdoor roulette! At last count there were 5 different holes that it has occupied!

Ja Ne!

The more I read, the more tempted I am to keep one of these again.

Not a bad score on the "shiny grey" DarkEye. I've had a couple and gotta admit I miss them in my collection very much.

Yeah I really wish I could get a shiny grey. I don't think there are any really available close by to me (Montreal). Ok I promised my buddy's idea that I was talking about before the weekend. So everyone let me know if you think this is a really bad idea. He wants to use the method I have used with the tennis ball tubes. He is planning on buying many trapdoors and putting each one in it's own tube. Then once each one has made it's burrow then cut the tennis ball tubes down to the substrate and burry each one in another aquarium with enough room so each burrow is not close to the other. So now you will have a full tank of trapdoors. It'll be like a little mine field for a cricket. I could imagine the spiders venturing out and encountering another trapdoor and being eaten and killed. Maybe he'll get some mating going on...??? Anyway so there is the idea. Let me know what you think.

P.S. I'll post some pics of it when it's done, but beware it might just look like an aquarium full of dirt.

No no you know what would be even better. Make a movie of them all being fed at once. NICE! Well that's if it works. Ok I'm done now.

the idea of a multiple spider tank sounds really cool... sadly it might end up with one very fat spider and i wouldn't advise it for the following reason.

I purchased a red trpdoor back in august at the BC arachnoparty from Mr Avery. Set her(or him) up in a very spartan tank and let it go to do what it does naturally. Took it 3 days to burrow and since then the tank has been devoid of life or so it seems. Just recently i have become a very nocturnal person and have been staying up til odd hours of the darktime. Seraphim comes out of it's burrow nightly and patrols it's tank for 20 to 30 minutes a night. I dunno if all do this but even is just a few do... it would seem that the multi spider set up would be a partial failure.

Just my two cents on the idea....
