Hey guys I've been thinking about getting my first centipede soon and had a few question as to what to get. I want a good colored and decent sized pede. And one that won't cost me an arm and leg. Ant suggestions and where I could find them would be awesome. Thanks

My first was Scolopendra subspinipes dehaani. Very hardy (my cat ended up killing her though :() and active. I believe some people on here said theirs hid but mine rarely did and would shoot out from a pile of dirt like a bullet from a gun as soon as anything touched the substrate. I got her from a reptile show for 10 bucks. I'm sure more experienced people will chime in but that's my tidbit. The venom isn't nice though.

Thanks for info. Dehaani is a species I've actually been considering. I'm not worried about the venom as I do keep andros and parabuthus scorpions as well tarantulas. So I'm pretty good about respecting the animal. More ideas and suggestions would be appreciate.

Well lucky for you there are only a handful of pedes that will run you an arm and a leg in terms of cost. If you want a big pede the first thing that comes to mind is a s subspinipes. Dont limit your choices to Dehaani there are so many other localities with many different colors. I would take a look at the differet varieties that exist within that species.

S heros is another good choice they are a bit more price than a 20 dollar subspinipes, I wouldn't expect to pay more than 100 for a good sized specimen though. There are a few different colorations that exist within the species too.

In terms of availability they really arnt that hard to find just look on the classifieds, put up an add, ken the bug guy has a good selection although I think his prices are a bit to high.
