Pyxicephalus... no depth perception?

Alright, so I bought a captive bred Pyxicephalus adspersus a couple of days ago, with a body length of about 2 inches, this is my first frog, and it seems healthy and active. So far it's eaten one giant lobster roach and two crickets. Now here's the odd thing, at least to me. When prey is put in the enclosure it will immediately notice and start stalking, but when it gets somewhat close, it will strike repeatedly while prey is clearly out of range, and sometimes "give up" when it fails to catch it. Being used to tarantulas and mantids and with their nearly 100% first strike accuracy, this kind of worries me. Is this normal frog behavior or is there something wrong?

Are both eyes health and clear, if one eyes is not as healthy as the other that will affect depth perception.

My leopards geckos have the same issue, thats why I stopped feeding them crickets. They'll lunge but always be short. Both eyes appear to have no problems.

Both eyes are clear and healthy looking, and it certainly has no problem seeing for some distance, it hopped out of it's water dish and started hunting as soon as crickets were in the tank. I'll have to see how it deals with other prey. I've heard that regular feeding of rodents can affect the vision of horned frogs, so maybe that applies to these too, but the dealer who sold me the frog actually warned agaist excessive rodent feeding, so I don't think that would be an issue with this animal.

all of my frogs do that. i assume that they're just not that accurate. i mean, look at them. they're not built to be snipers, like mambas or something.

Toads are that was as well. Ive raised a lot of spadefoot toads and they cant for the life of them get the bug on the first strike. Its a 90/10 miss ratio. Poor critters. Good thing theyre so darling :D

Haha, I've seen plenty of youtube videos of that guy in action, he's a voracious beast! I probably would have bought an adult male too if I could afford it at the time, but it will be fun to watch this one grow.

Out of curiosity, what kind of lighting do you use for your frog? I was told that none is needed for this species (Since it's naturally nocturnal) as long as the diet is good, but I've also seen other sources say it really helps, I just want to make sure it grows as healthily as possible. Right now I have a full spectrum incandescent bulb in a lamp in the same room, I just moved it to be about three feet above the tank, I just don't want it to get too hot in there.
