Okay, I did a roaches + heat search and nothing comes up. So here I am, my room is currenly 65 degree at night and it gets up to about 75 during the day. My Ts love the temp. but my roaches just won't pop the babies! The female are VERY big. I currenly have 2 colony going at the moment. They are housed in large clothing tubes, and are hissing roaches. SO the question is, how will I be able to raise the temp only in the tubes without any heavry duty installations. Or even part of my room would be okay, what kinda set up do you guys have for roaches if you have a cold room? Anything helps!

By the way

GOOD MORNING!

Harry

I have my roaches in their own corner of a room with the smallest portable space heater I could find. It's pointed at their tank at an angle so that one side is warm while the other side is a little cooler. It seems to be working great because, while I haven't actually seen a ton of babies (well, except for when I lifted an egg crate once and a ton of them scattered), I have noticed that food disappears much faster and I also have seen a lot more adults at the food trough. I know that a lot of people also get heat mats and put it underneath the tank, but the only ones I was able to find only stay on for 2 hours. The space heater I bought was only $19.00 at Wal-Mart and you can adjust the temperature and fan speed.

Can those heat fan be turned on 24/7?

I leave mine on all day and night. It has an automatic shut-off if it gets too hot, and comes back on when it cools down. It rarely ever gets too hot though. It only does if I accidentally leave my bedroom door shut, but if it's open it stays on. My mom thinks it'll start a fire (I don't even live at home and she's paranoid  ) but like I said, it has a safety shut-off.

I have 2 colonies of blaberus discoidalis. Both are producing colonies. #1 has 11" flexwatt (available at http://www.thebeanfarm.com I store them in an opaque tote with the center cut out of the lid. The flexwatt is taped to the bottom of the container and run into a rheostat. My second tote is blue plastic, with a snap-on lid. I have a few large holes cut in the lid and sides. To heat this tote I use a ceramic heater (60 watt). The fixture for this is available at the above link. The fixture is screwed into a large hole I cut ion the lid on the feeding side of the bin. It is also on a rheostat. I have a dual probe thermometer monitoring temps in both colonies and keep them around 85-90F. These are kept in the corner of my LR at home. In the summer, I put them in the garage without any heating, of course. These are non-climbing roaches. Di

Hissers

I find that the Hissers are piccky eaters, and need optimal conditions to breed. If you are looking for a feeder Roach I would recommend Blaptica Bubia, they cant climb or fly, they are great!

Do not get an air blown heater for the roaches. Go to the drug store and get a lap heating mat (meant for people). Then lay in under the roach container. I do this with the dubia and they love it, plus the heat does not get out of control. The roaches love it, and if they start over producing all you do is turn off the mat.

You should have taken some adults with you then. But you were over here you saw how many babies I am getting. I think the adult colony is cranking out 2000+ babies every two weeks.

I thought the air heater was a good idea, I mean, it's been working and all. I just have to turn it off if they start getting out of control. But I've got some sub-adults that I'm just waiting to mature then I may slow them down a bit.

Yeah it was crazy. How long does it take for those nymals to mature?

Alexis, the furnace was down two weeks ago and I was forced to turn on my baseboard heater to keep my tarantulas (and the rest of the upstairs) warm. Man, were my Ts and cockroaches loving it! {D

I'll have to get one of those electric heating pads for the roaches. I have 100 and I haven't seen too many babies, but there's more in there now than there has been! I sure wish I could jumpstart my colony a little more.

Do you think humidity may be a factor? Being winter, it may be dryer. We have a humidifier going in the room with our snakes and tarantulas, and our cockroaches were breeding like crazy.

Humidity might be a factor with some species. But with dubia it's not. As long as I keep the water crystal bowl full they breed eat and breed some more with no issues no matter what the season.

But as I said there are some species that would be more dependent on humidity.

Just a few months, 3 max. If you slack on the food or water then a little longer.

I keep whatever roach colony I need the most babies from ontop of a light fixture for one of my vivariums. Anyone else keeping herps could try this and save on electric bills(just make sure that it is stable!).

Neat idea ~

I'll pop one of my colonies on top of my Beardies' tank, and try that!
