razor - just by owning a miranda you'll get the respect you deserve, regardless of a post count :)

Is that P. miranda yours, or are you just wanting to know for sure what it is called?

If it is yours, show more pics...please!

So arachnological respect is gained by buying expenisve tarantulas?

Is ignorance really bliss?

Nice spider! Am I the only one who still thinks the ornata and regalis reign supreme within the pokie world though? ;)

I'm with you on the regalis being one of the nicest pokies, but, come on, even if metallicas cost a quarter they'd be the nicest out there imo.

Poke Miranda

Someone wanted to see a pic of one of my mirandas from top to bottom. I hope this works for you.

As far as I know, the patella's on legs 1 and 4 are supposed to be all white on miranda. I'm not quite sure that that is a miranda......

I was actually thinking the same thing. I Didn't want to be a party-pooper like Scott (Hi Scott :))
Anyways, to me it looks more like P. rufilata, or even P. ornata. Which, IMO, are one of the more spectacular members of the genus, besides P. metallica, or course.
I've attached a pic of P. miranda to make a comparision with.

he got them from mike at the spider shoppe and he is a pretty reputable dealer so I would assume that it is in fact a P. miranda.

Probably not, but I'd have to at least lay down some respect for spending the $$ on that kinda poec - a certain amount of experience is implied....

Yep, it's either experience or great stupidity talking at that point. Further posts from any particular individual will make clear which.

I'm still not convinced that this is P. miranda. When I look at the pic, I see, heavier than miranda, metatarsal and patella striations, that is obvious in rufilata/ornata. Also, I see the "Nike Swoop" design on the metatarsus of each leg, a charateristic found on both rufilata and ornata.
Maybe it is miranda, if picture lighting and quality is low, but I'm not so sure. I'm sure Mike at the Spider shoppe reputable, but mistakes can happen, especially with spiderlings that are sometimes featureless.

Hmm funny .. when I saw the pic I also thought ... this is not miranda.. it could be nice to get a pic from another angel... I have around 150 miranda spiderlings in different sizes but none of them looks like this ... maybe it is just the light or hopefully it is just the light on the pic... But I have heard rumours about petstores selling fasciata and ornata as miranda.....

Yes, mistakes can happen. Even to someone who has kept tarantulas for 30 years :(. The 10 spiderlings I purchased as Poecilotheria miranda from Pat Kane (while at Regal Reptiles, not Kane Zoological) are actually P. rufilata. As you can imagine, I am absolutely livid and out about $700 from the overcharge. Part of me is embarrased that I didn't notice it until now, but the truth is that I got them at 3/4" and most Pokies look very similar at that size. I am most embarrased because I have had doubts whether they were truly P. miranda since I saw John Hoke's specimens and hadn't gotten around to double-checking. Maybe my wishful thinking had me hoping that white patellas would pop-up overnight. I don't know. I also remind myself that I work 15 hour days 7 days a week caring for thousands of spiders and herps and unless a Pokie happens to be out of its cork tube I really don't see them much. Fortunately, "razorripley" is the only person I have sold one to so I only have to compensate him for the problem. When I became aware of this thread I dug one of the "miranda" out - it just molted and is close to 2" so it is a perfect representative of the group. I examined it and identified it as rufilata. Thanks to Scott Scher for emailing me a pictorial key to the genus Poecilotheria using ventral leg patterns for ID for further verification. I cannot even begin to tell you how I feel. Be careful, ya'll.
