Breeding report for Poecilotheria striata.

Time: Early morning, around 4 am.

Temperature: Approx 70-75 F

Humidity: Unknown

Lighting: Dimmed, almost no lighting at all.

Last molts: The 2 females molted early September, the MM sometime in August (according to last owner)

Pairing success: Attempt #1 FAIL, Attempt #2 FAIL, Attempt #3 ????, Attempt #4 ????

My first attempted pairing was sometime last week (can't remember the dates), I introduced the male to the female and he proceeded tapping away. He lured her out of the cage, and he began to go in, but rushed in too fast and spooked the female.

On the 2nd attempt (This time with the larger female) The male proceeded tapping and started to lure the female out, but the female suddenly lunged at him , and I had to separate them for the safety of the male.

On the 3rd attempt, I cohabbed the MM with the larger female for approx 3 days. Unknown if there was a hookup.

On the 4th attempt, I cohabbed the MM with the smaller female. MM is currently still with the smaller female.

Will update soon.

UPDATE - 11-01-2009, 03:15 PM

The larger female seems unresponsive to the male's tapping, I will trying pairing up the smaller female again, as she still responds to the tapping.

UPDATE

Almost completely unsuccessful.

Spider room temps range between the upper 70s and mid 80s F.

Males and female were typically paired in the evenings.

Female Post#1 (She is quite small and only 18 months old at the time of the pairing.

Female Post#6 Large female purchased Spring 2009 as a mature female.

Male Post #3 Received on loan from Harrod in January of 2009

Female P. striata #1:

Left male and females cages open overnight inside a larger breeder tank 1/13/2009, 1/21/2009, and 1/26/2009. No insertions were witnessed, but the next morning they seemed to lack interest in each other (insert morning after jokes here).

Eggsac was produced Sept 16, 2009.

Eggsac was pulled Oct 25, 2009. Very few eggs (probably due to her being so small) Some dessicated eggs, a few dessicated eggs with legs, one living eggs with legs, and 2 1st instars that were stuck to dead eggs. The living 1st instars and egg with legs were transferred to a moist incubator/ICU to see if they will live.

Female P. striata #6:

Pairings were done at night and supervised to preserve the male.

Pairing occurred 6/3/2009

Eggsac was produced around 9/16/2009.

Oct 24, 2009 female abandoned eggsac.

Oct 25,2009 Eggsac removed as female still had no interest in it.

Results: 3 dead 1st instars. A few darkened eggs with legs that are still moving but will probably not make it. Also a number of dead developed eggs, and eggs with legs. Humidity seems to be an issue with this one as well.

Conclusion: These were kept similar to my other pokies. It appears that humidity was an issue. Future eggsacs will be provided with more humidity to hopefully prevent any more eggsacs that contain dessicated eggs. Adult cages were similar to the other pokies with somewhat moistened soil and a water dish. The soil was allowed to dry, but water dishes were checked regularly.

Success!

Basic info:
Male final molt: 01/2011
Female molt: 08/04/2011

I bred the male with 2 females over the entire month of June 2011. I saw successful pairings with both females.

Enclosure was kept a bit dryer from November to December 2011, then I flooded the soil a couple of times.
The female enclosed herself in webbings on 15 December 2011, and I saw her making the eggsac on 2 January 2012.

13/02/2012: Removed eggsac. Discovered something around 110 healthy nymphs (eggs with legs).

01/03/2012: Darkened eggs with legs.

06/03/2012: Molting into second nymph stadium.

24/03/2012: Darkened second nymph stadium.

30/03/2012: All molted into spiderlings.

Total: 107 healthy spiderlings (5 bad nymph I, 2 bad nymph II)
Temperature was between 23°C and 27°C, and the enclosure was kept pretty moist since P.striata lives quite moist.

Poecilotheria Striata
successful

Special care
female was given a large Dubia roach once a week prior to pairing.her last molt was on 26/10/11.

Pairing
Male was shark tanked for one night and then introduced to the female on 11th November, 2011 where he co-habited for one week and was removed.
I paired them again four days in the last week in November, then later forwarded the male to Richard Gallon.

Post mating care
The temps in her tank were around 75'f from December 2011 until February 2012.
Early march 2012 her tank was soaked, mid April I placed her tank on the top shelf at around 82'f.
Early June I covered her tank with a pillowcase, she layed an eggsack on July 6th.

I then pulled the eggsack on August 7th 2012 at 33 days.
i counted over 90 EWL.
13th August molted in to N2's
18 N2's died in incubator.
3rd September, they started molting to spiderlings.

Total =71*
