To really make a somewhat accurate guess on sex, I would like to see a freshly molted exuvium pic to view the Spermathecae. Pocilotheria sp. almost always have to be sexed in this manner IMO.

Thanks folks. I shall get both dorsal/folio and an exuvium shots and post them as soon as I can. I plan on selling this guy kinda soon so I'm just looking for a positive sexing. Thanks. :)

Well let me know when you have a male with a white band that thick and bright, and yellow and white so bright on the legs. Cause I want him if you have one. All my males even before maturing are a drab color all over. Even the strip is thinner and weaker in color. Ahh well guess we shale wait for a molt.
I always have to wait for a molt. I never get visual sexing right with pokies.

I'd say male. The brightness may just be from the flash.
My male has a strip that same size

Hey folks,

Man this is an old thread...anyway, my P. regalis (same ones as in the pics) molted last week and is just about 6 inches. Since there are no sperm bulbs on the palps at a full 6", can this mean its a female??...or can it still be a male at 6" and not have the sperm bulbs??

If I can get a camera, I'll post pics. The molt was kinda destroyed by him/her, and further mangled while I tried to take it out without pissing it off.

Thanks for any replies. :)

If I'm not mistaken, the bulbous appearance of the palps is caused by the male making a sperm web and transferring the sperm to the palps. Right? If so, it should be at least a few more weeks for him to start making the web. And I'm also not sure about this either, but do pokies have hooks?

Hopefully the molt isn't in too bad of shape for it to be sexed.

I'm not sure if they have hooks, but I'm pretty sure the pedipalps differ on mature males. Hmmm....

Pokies don't develop tarsal spurs, I don't think. But a MM will have the "bulbs" as soon as he molts. Or really, before he molts, just underneath the exuvium, if you want to get technical. Anyway, emboli don't swell noticeably to the eye when "charged".

Regalis are very sexually dimorphic. If it really is 6 inches in legspan, look up pictures of male and female regalis online, you'll be able to tell. From the abdominal pics I'd say female just because of the size and shape and color of the abdomen and abdominal stripe.

Looks like a lady to me.

Edite: Had to add picture for comparison. Granted, my regalis is not as large as yours, you can still see the differences.

My regalis is 100% maaale, you can see the differences in the coloring and the stripe on the abdomen like Ryan mentioned before.

Cool, thanks for the input Rain Flower! :)

For some reason I just think mine is one of the more dimorphic specimens. Theres things about it that make me think its male, and theres things that make me think its female. Geez, I've had it for a year and raised it since it was an itty bitty thing...I should know by know. :wall: :wall:
