Containers like these work if properly ventilated.

They will, but the container on the right, I'm not a fan of. Cheap for sure, but the geometry sucks in my experience, NOT for the T, for ME haha

The one thing I don't like about those containers other than geometry is the screw on lid doesn't give you that much working room between you and T in the X- axis. I just don't like them. They work fine for others!

You're definitely right about them not giving you much room to work. I wouldn't put something fast and hot like a pokie in one for that reason.

I agree with Trenor :astonished: just kidding.
I went to Walmart, got a 1.97$ plastic/sterlite container. Put a lot holes around it about 2-3" and holes around the bottom above where you'll put 2" of cheap organic substrate. Then got a cheap piece of corkbark -- 1.75$ from a lps and then got some vining type plastic plants. They use the leaves and cork bark to anchor their cute little webs together. I went to Walmart and got a 6.00$ glue gun and then a .97$ glue sticks and glued the vines to the corkbark. Put a plastic lid with his water in it. It took my little guy less than a month to web. He's made a huge beautiful web and he's a happy little cute boy.
Yes I say cute when I talk about Ts especially Avics.
Give yours time. I bet she's very traumitized. Thank you for rescueing her.

Those will work, that would give a good amount of working room too, an important factor in keeping your T in the container and not out of it should it feel threatened.
The dimensions of that one I posted look big enough? Also can I ask just out of curiosity what is actually bad about the tp roll other than it looks trashy? I ask because an arachnologist friend actually suggests using them on a budget.

Any chance you could show me a picture of your set up, I'm so much more of a visual person that attempting to picture that is hurting my brain lol.

If you put it on its end, so it's taller. It's fine for a temporary space sure. A permanent home I try to give them more space, like 12x12x12, some do 8x8x12 for certain sized adult Avics.

The reason I rule out the TP roll is two reasons

1. They can chew them up- Ts can chew through metal screen as well, tough fangs in a way.
2. Many owners who don't know a lot, read care sheets OR get bad advice about humidity and think they need to mist their Avic like a plant. Or they keep the sub moist. So when you put moisture in contact with TP/paper products, it can often be a great way to grow mold.

So, with a beginner, I like to give them the best advice, rather than cutting corners. Cutting corners when one doesn't know a lot, usually ends up to be a bad situation for the animal (usually death). Quite honestly, cutting corners with exotics isn't wise at all. They aren't like dogs or cats that give us signs something is wrong. Usually by the time something is wrong, that animal will be dead, esp Ts.

The waterdish needs cleaning because he puts substrate in it -- they ALL do. I use eco-earth, but it's more expensive.
That is one strong T you got, having to live like that.

Man, when I first saw them, I thought "Great". Then I put my AF Avicularia geroldi in there, what a mistake that was. She would attempt to run out quite a few times. It wasn't fun having to "fight" back a 5-6" Avic, docile they are not. Plus in like 3 steps she'd be out due to her size and typical position.

You are correct on the OW Ts and notoriously fast species. A recipe for disaster.

Would a medium size piece of corkbark work?

Sounds something this size wouldn't be good for a permanent set up (I would rather only buy one thing and avoid having to rehome her multiple times)? I'm having trouble finding a similar style container any bigger.

I agree with viper in away about the size. If she's a big girl then that container's not big enough. I have a 1.5" youngster. If she's a big girl, you have to size up. I haven't figured out the next move. I'm still a newbie. Hmmmm

That will work. I'd make sure that whatever you put inside the container doesn't take up the entire container. You want space to put a water dish on the substrate/container floor.

They do/will walk around at night outside of their home.

Amazon's not giving the size. The trick is getting tank, plants, water dish, corkbark all able to live comfortably.

I was in the same boat as you are with my A. avicularia. Mine is pretty much a full grown adult and was living in a horrible setup that I had to move them out of immediately. My problem is that I am very limited with the enclosures that I have to choose from because I am in Canada. I have over a half a dozen quotes out with acrylic manufacturers and will hopefully get a couple of custom, front opening, enclosures made up this month for my two larger avics.
I had to rig something up that is worlds better than what they had before, but are still not ideal. Personally, I find it very awkward to work with top opening enclosures because they tend to web close to the top and are right there when I open them up. Luckily, my two are fairly calm, and slow moving, and I have yet to have an escape.
Moving them is stressful, but even if you can get them into a cleaner, more appropriate enclosure for a short while, until you can get a perfect one set up, it could be worth moving them twice.
I don't have a lot of experience with avics, but I have read up a lot and everyone agrees that they can go downhill fast. Your poor little tyke is lucky that they found you when they did.

So very true. Vanessa, are you able to get ExoTerras? Didn't realize it was so limiting in some ways there. I'm sure the setups will be nice.

If you get front opening made for Avics, one thing I would do if I was you, is have the doors NOT flush w/that top of the container. If you leave a lip below, then the Avics are even less disturbed generally. If you don't have such a lip, then they may web door/wall/ceiling.

See Jamie's design for a visual of the above, notice how the door is centered.

She seems pretty dainty to me, maybe because I'm used to our wild tarantulas here. The KK she's in is only about 10-10.5 inches long x 6ish inches wide x 6 high.
