sorry to tell you, but many pinesnakes have a NASTY disposition. they are wonderful to look at, though, good eaters and hardy. so got for it if you don't mind watching your hands :D.

I've kept and bred Pituophis for many years. It's been my experience that there is a considerable difference in personality between the Northern and Southern Pines. Northerns tend to be much more laid-back and calm than Southerns. I've only had one Southern Pine that wasn't at least a hisser, and most will strike without hesitation. In contrast, I've only seen one Northern which would strike. I have a seven-foot male Northern now, and he's one of the gentlest snakes I own. Generally speaking, though, most members of this genus do tend to have mood swings and can be really sweet one day, and hissing and lunging at everything the next. When they get pissed about something, they STAY pissed for several hours or several days, even, and little things like wrong color of the rat you try to feed them can set them off!

means that they don't have quite the nicest temper.... more likely to try to take a bite out of you, hiss or emit a bad odor....

yea i had a pine snake, about 2 feet, it hissed constantly and tried to bite often. For some reason it stopped eating and eventually died. I brought it to the vet but they couldnt figure anything out.

BTW, pituophis are one of the biggest bluffers. Instead of trying to get away like a racer or corn snake, a pituophis will attempt to stand it's ground and hiss. If the hissing doesn't work, the snake will attempt a mock strike. A strike in which the snake will lunge at you, but with a closed mouth. This gives the impression of being punched/head-butted by the snake just like a hognose snake.

You should try out a pituophis snake. They are great snakes to work with and they have an extremely calm demeanor (once you get pass their bluff).
