Gentle but confident.
It's not something you chase the T around alot and keep attempting. It agrivates the T.
I practiced on one of our rosies.
Since I have found it handy.
Remember to use Just enough pressure to hold but not harm.
I sooth with a few gentle touches to the rump first.
How much this actualy helps I don't know but it works for me.
Then I go into the grip itself.
It seems as if a few touches help keep them from being so startled when you go to pick them up.
But the experts here would know more.

An alternative would be to place your T in a clean, empty deli-cup. You can usually get a pretty good look at the underside that way.
