Does anyone else have this issue? My arms, hands, even legs and feet break out multiple times a day on a daily basis because of their hairs. I really love mine but my god the hairs are driving me insane. I’m thinking about getting rid of them because my hands are almost always scarred because of the itching, and I was wondering if anyone else experienced something similar?

Yes, their hairs are irritating, but not as bad as Theraphosa. Try not to get them upset. Take care to avoid disturbances especially with air and touch. IF you have a quick hair flicker, use a fine misting water bottle sprayer to mist lightly a vapor misting over their abdomen to knock down the hairs. Also, invest in a high quality hepa machine as well for your spider room.

proper precautions can help prevent getting haired.

That does sound very unpleasant. You may be more sensitive to them, and if it is an allergic reaction it *could* get worse.

I have had hairs kicked at me several times, I've done "procedures" to mine requiring handling them, and am yet to get haired that way.... Two times I have: once I was pulling a molt out of my LP enclosure and just grabbed it by the leg. I keep fans on in my spider room. The hairs wafted into the sleeve of my robe lol. A good week of itching, no visible reaction.

The second, I was carrying in 2 new tarantulas in their critter keepers, on a very windy day, I decided to hold my precious cargo with my arms and then hold down the top enclosure with my chin. A few days of my neck itching, but no visible reaction. Edit to add species: I was holding a G pulchra and B boehmei

I am not a neat freak by any means, there are dried molts who knows where, vacant enclosures I haven't cleaned out with no lids. And those fans. I just make a point to keep the cats out of that room, I deserve whats coming to me 🤣

I'm not bragging I just am using this as evidence that you personally may be more susceptible to having a reaction. And without mitigation you may have to trade them in for a hairless model :/

Lucky enough, I don’t get much problems with them to even begin with:
  • Pamphobeteus paisa
  • Pamphobeteus solaris
  • Pamphobeteus esmeraldas
  • Pamphobeteus chinche

I’ve done the vapor misting but it always seems like some hairs get launched, might have to be more careful. I don’t have a space for a hepa machine since i keep them in my room, but that’s something to look into

I think it’s something that got worse over time, I was especially sensitive to brachypelma but had little to no reaction to theraphosa so I thought that i would be fine. The opposite was true where it started out as a light itch but it snowballed and kept getting worse. As i type this out my fingers are feeling hot and itchy haha

If you aren't seeing any redness, swelling, hives, the hairs are just doing their job...

You'd have to search for it but I have come across the different types of hairs, I believe they are numbered I-IV, some species have one, some a few different, you just want to avoid those "types"

Sorry I'm lazy right now I'd find it for you 🤣

Duct tape was recently suggested elsewhere:

Yeah it gets worse with exposure to the certain types it seems for me as well. You should wear long sleeves and gloves on with them over your cuffs when tou do maintenance

You may be at a point to where you might want to consider only having T's that don't possess UrS.

I'm more curious how you're getting UrS on you. Going off your description it leads me to imagine that your either handling your T's or you are opening their enclosures and causing a great disturbance. Or maybe both scenarios.

I have a few NW's that kick UrS when threaten. I do not get their UrS on me however. I also will add that their enclosures are never disturbed outside of maintenance, feeding and water.

I know for a fact he is regretfully considering this :/

And yeah I think there is some ways that you he can reduce the chances of getting heavily exposed to more setae so that he doesnt have to really think about getting rid of all the NW's with urticating setae, or at least the Pamphobeteus

It sucks but for some people it's a necessity giving up T's that have the worse UrS.

I have read and heard in the past that some people are so sensitive to NW T's with UrS that they can't even be around them. Just being around them not getting UrS on them causing irritation of the skin.

I don't know if there's any truth to that as I never met anyone that happened to.

I'm highly sensitive to all UrS types but I don't have any reaction unless I get them on me.

I always worry about eyes. It's always in the back of my mind of floating UrS in the air getting in my eyes.

Im sorry that your Phampo is causing you problems! I just got a Theraphosa Stirmi so im dreading the hairs, though I do have nitrile gloves and a face shield so I should be okay... but still. That sucks! Is it a beautiful Pampo? I want the big black one. The... uh... antoines?

Will trade for pamphos lol. But as was stated you can take precautions. Gloves, long sleeves, turn off fans or circulating air. Unfortunately it is known that your reaction to their hairs will likely worsen and not acclimate. And everyone has a different reaction to different types of setae. Theraposa and brachypelma/tlitcotl mess me up, but LP/pamphos/Nhandu don't bother me. My friend is almost the opposite.

White vinegar helps neutralise the itch , I get this from my pulchra soon as I touch anything from his viv I get itchy blisters he doesnt even kick i just get them anyways, don't get it off any other spood but nm. Soon as I feel it starting to itch I put white vinegar on it either sit with it submerged if it's fingers or put some on a cloth n sit with it on if it's my arms ect.
I was told ages ago it works on t hair like it does to neutralise nettle or jellyfish stings n while I have no idea if its actually true I did try it n it works for me.
Apart from that I have a specific hoody with long sleeved that I wear when doing stuff with him to try n stop the hair from getting to my skin. Gloves help too.
Hopefully this helps you and you won't have to get rid of them 🤞🤞🤞
