This story gets wheeled out about twice a year in the UK and it's always the same: The spider most likely never existed, but if it did it would be a Cupiennius of some kind. I'd bet proper money that no Phoneutria ever entered the country via a banana shipment. The UK press love a spider story, and it's never true as a rule.
