It's almost time to get started on my large cage outside. It will be used for my black throat monitor, burmese pythons, retic pythons, and possibly my chams.

Now, the only thing I'm having diffculty planning is what kind of fencing I am going to use to stop escapes and damages to the animals. Any ideas would be great.

I think I have the idea down for the door, but any other ideas would be great.

Last thing; fake grass, real grass or plain ol' dirt on the bottom? The ground in my backyard is going to be the substrate. Once I get started I'll be posting pics

Thanks for the advice

You will need to use at 1/4" wire, anything bigger and racoons will reach their entire arm, up to where it meets their body into the cage and if someone is sleeping near the side/within reaching distance, you can kiss them good bye. Anything smaller and it just doesn't have enough strength and the racoons can just rip off the wire. Trust me on that, I've had a lot of experience with racoons getting into peoples enclosures because they used wire that was too big and coons ripped aniamls through the wire, or too small and they just ripped off the wire completly. Heck you may want to double up on the 1/4". Also some screen might be good to keep misquitos out.

Let me clarify, these snakes/reptiles aren't going to be kept outside permanently. They have their own big enclosures inside. It's just a summer "play" area during the day while I'm out in the backyard, or if I'm too busy, a certain day, to take the snake out to handle it and let it roam. You know what I mean?

Paul, if it's just a day thing, I would go with reinforced chicken wire, 1/4 in. As far as substrate, go with your plain old dirt. But I would add some rocks for security and a hide just in case they want out of the sun. Basically, it's just going to be a basking/handling area like you said.

Yup exactly what I was planning. There will be quite a few hiding spots, with logs, trees, and rocks. There will also be a pond with a mini waterfall and a good filter. I'll take pictures of the whole process.
