I'm a tarantula guy and don't know my other spiders like I should. This guy made a web that stretched across the doorway to our house and I walked right into it, of course. I happened to have my camera and thought I'd ask ya'll.
She was 2.5" and just striking! Take a look and tell me what you think. Sorry for the quality of the first shot!

I'm new to spiders too, so I'm just throwing out a wild guess here:

I'm thinking it's a type of orbweaver? Someone please correct me if i'm completely off base here.....

It's not Nephila or Argiope aurantina, NRF if likely correct.

I can agree with Neoscona. I was first thinking of that as well. At least Neoscona adianta has the dark longitudinal stripe in the middle of the carapace, which seem to lack from Aculepeira. The abdominal markings looks more like Aculepeira. Anyway it is one of these two genera, not any other. The photo I sent is for sure Aculepeira.

No suck-spider. Either Neoscona or Aculepeira. That's for sure.

Try this link

Given that its web spanned your door, it is likely an orbweaver. I went to Bugguide.net and it looks to me like something from the Genus Neoscona based on the pattern on the back. Try the below link.

You can also post your picture for id on this site.
