when people ask this question then I say no, you are not ready. why, because their are essentially two things you need when dealing with old worlds. the first is experience with T's in generally, which you have since you have three T's already. so you know about their needs and wants to care for them successfully. the second thing that you need to have is confidence. I see to many people on here talk about how their OBT or other highly defensive old world species scares the crap out of them. they talk about how they are scared to lift up the lid to refill the water bowel or get left over out the tanks. you can't be scared of your pet, because it will not be well taken care of if you are terrified. I am not saying you need to be fearless with them and be able to hold it in your hand either. however if something happens like it escapes or you need to rehouse it you need to have confidence, having cofidence will allow you to asses the situation and the action needed to be taken with out going to defcon 1 in the process. so if you have ask if you are ready for it, then I will say no not yet

That's it, pteriniochilus murinus, AKA OBT. The bit that I do know is, you had better be fast. Your rose hair is a snail compared to these, and nowhere near as voracious. I'd advise not, but it comes down to if you're ready to make a huge leap or not, especially regarding speed. If you're really well versed and think you really are ready, try it. Keep in mind too, that if it does get you, you may be laid up for a week. Check Bite Reports and ask if you're ready. If you do get one, good luck :)

The OP mentioned owning a P.vittata, so he might have some experience with a speedy T.

thanks for all the info guys. I've decided to get him/her tomorrow. I think i'll be ok with her, i respect these guys and dont mess around with them any more than i need to, so it should all be ok. These guys are terrestrial, and like to burrow right? how much substrate would you recommend? I've got a spare critter keeper to put her in, and will post pics in the morning when i get her.

Any thing else I should know about?

Keep them dry with good ventilation. They spin more than dig, so the substrate doesn't need to be deep. The slings are fast but timid. By 2" they get color and an attitude. That's when you have to be careful with them.

They are really cool T's, very hardy and will construct a big webbed hide, wether you provide one or not they will make one, as said they are fast but keep that in mind when watering etc, as OW go they are very "easygoing" in husbandry terms, post pics when you get a chance and enjoy your little friend.

Well, i just got her home, and rehoused her. Wow, what a stunning T these guys are. Absolutely beautiful. I must say though, she didnt seem as feisty as all the horror stories make out. Not 1 threat posture, she strolled out of her tub and into her new home with utmost dignity. Dont worry, i wont be lulled into a false sense of security though!

Some pics.

Say hello to cinnamon.

And this is Hayley, my blue beauty. Do you think shes close to molting? she looks a little scruffy.

this is Pandora

a warm welcome to to Florance

and last, but by no means least. This is Jessica!

Congrats! She's beautiful :)

To be honest I think you did the right thing, as long as you know how to take care of them properly, it all has to do with your confidence and bravery. My collection escalated quickly. In my first two years I went from a G. rosea to an S. cal in 6 tarantulas. Call me stupid, but I've had nothing but success so far. Though I have ample respect for the more aggressive, venomous old world species, they don't scare me. All my rehousings have gone relatively smoothly and routine maintenance is uneventful. Going at your own pace is important.

T's can be overwhelmed with shipping and new cages. But once they settle in, expect to see their real personality. Report back in a few months on your OBT. Probably won't be as timid. The stories you've heard weren't exaggerated.

shes not done much biting yet :)

she was even quite docile when it came to feeding, almost like she didnt like killing to eat. it was very gentle lol. maybe I have the exception the rule? just like evil rosies.

Still, i dont think i'll be letting my guard down though.

My girlfriend wont come into my room now though, not after i showed her some of the evil obt's on youtube haha. She actually slept on the sofa last night.

I still cant get over how beautiful these T's are. catch her in the right light, and she has amazing blue boots on!
