I caught this olios Ssp. giant crab spider under a rock in the desert, she built a egg shaped coccoon in a cork round and about 2 mos later emerged w/ a few bunch of little olios'es, I had always marveled at her speed and have now seen that the young are as quick or quicker but my prob is how am I saposed to get the babies out of the enclosure? some have suggested cooling them in the fridge but I'm a little worried that It would hurt them or I might leave them in too long, How would you know when they were cool enough?, any help would be apreciated, Thanks B.

Hi,

sorry, if this is a dumb question, but why don´t you just take the mother to another enclosure and leave the youngsters where they are?

Could spare you some trouble...

Stefan

They are verry, verry quick, catching the female alone is a task in this enclosure, and the wide mouth makes it a certanty that many of these little speedsters will be out before ive come close to captureing the female, I dont know alot about this Ssp. but do they not canabilize like T's after a while? lmk if any one has any more info on raising slings of this Ssp., if you look at the pics the design of the container poses more than a few probs in that the sides are all circular and there are no flat spots to "cup" them and again the mouth is just so wide.

Hi again,

yeah, now i understand your problem.

Perhaps it might work, if you try to let their escape-skills work for you: you better have a bathroom + bathtub ready, a lot of vials and at least one additional peron that can help you. Put the container with the spiders into the bathtub, have the vials ready and open up the lid just a bit. It has to be open so far, that the slings can get out, but it has to be closed enough, that the mother can´t get out. As flighty as the slings are they should recognize immediately that they can get out....

Now, all depends on speed: catch them one by one with the vials. If you should be a real lucky guy, they won´t be able to run up the bathtub (but i really doubt this...).

With slings of huntsman spiders it´s often a problem, to separate them, but i don´t see any other real option, than to risk it - one way or the other.

To answer your question if they´re cannibalistic: as much as i know about Olios ssp., leave them all together and you´ll have zip in no time.
For the first days / weeks (depends on species) hunting spiders can often be kept communally, given they have plenty retreats and enough food. From a certain time on, they´ll nevertheless start to prey on each other...

Stefan

Hi,

your welcome.

2 days? Sounds not too bad to me.

However, i can´t stress enough that i´m not all to familiar with spiders of this genus, so if you leave them together in the enclosure, you better often check how many slings are in it. May well be, that there are no losses at all over the next days, but when they start to prey on each other, it´ll go lightning-quick and you just have two fat specimen left...

Take care!

Greetings,

Stefan
