Ths is to advise everyone of the availability of the following -- Shelley, R. M. 2002. A Synopsis of the North American Centipedes of the order Scolopendromorpha. Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH) Memoir No. 5:1-108 -- for $40 +$5 S&H through the VMNH, the official publisher and distributor. This monograph, a career work of mine, represents 31 years of collecting the organisms across North America and examining preserved specimens in every known repository. It recognizes 27 species in 9 genera and 3 families; keys are provided at all taxonomic levels and characters are fully illustrated. With this reference, any North American naturalist should experience little difficulty arriving at reliable determinations. Detailed distribution maps summarize ranges and ecological and behavioral information is provided. The work is specifically tailored for non-biologists as well as scientific specialists.

This work represents what is, in effect, my intellectual property. I chose not to pursue royalties for it even though I could have done so, as I am not in biology for a monetary reward and advancing knowledge of North American myriapods is my primary career research goal. The $40 price was determined during discussions between myself and the VMNH publishing department to allow them to make a modest and reasonable profit to help offset drastic and debilitating budget cuts the institution has experienced the past few years. I voluntarily chose to authorize the VMNH to market this book without remuneration to me personally. The VMNH is thus the only place that has my permission to profit financially from this research that I labored over for 31 years.

I therefore ask that persons interested in purchasing a copy do so from the VMNH directly through the following two links (sorry I can't figure out how to insert them as clickable links):

http://www.vmnh.org/centipede.htm
http://www.vmnh.org/booksof2.htm

The latter provides an order form that people can print out and fax in. I regret that as of now the work cannot be ordered wholly electronically, but this is not something that I can influence or control. In any case, the VMNH is a deserving institution and the $40 cost is most reasonable; as stated this is the only place that has my permission to profit from my work.

Thank you. Rowland M. Shelley

I gave Dr. Shelley permission to post it here as this is something that I feel goes beyond the bounds of something that should be in classifieds and is something that should be seen by as many people into NA centipedes as possible.

Everyone-

Get it. It's good. Wanna know the difference between S. polymorpha and S viridis? Wanna know the range of S. heros? Wanna see range maps, taxonomic keys, and illustrations of key features to look for when idenifying pedes? It's in there!

Sorry to post this Q here but there's no e-mail to contact Rowland M. Shelley. I had a question regarding an apparent undescribed specie of Centipede. If you read this, can you please e-mail me if you have the time? I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks.

p.s. If anyone knows how to contact Rowland Shelley, can you please let me know? Thanks!

Atrax-

You could join the millipede yahoo group (it's for centipedes, too) and post it there. Dr. Shelly is a regular participant there. I think you can get there from the links section here at arachnopets.
