My New OBT.

I picked her up about two weeks ago. She's about 4", and in a 10 gallon tank. The pictures don't do her justice, she is a lot brighter in person.

Her Enclosure.(10 gallon)

Her hide. I like how she put substrate over the web.

Very nice! I didn't think I was ready for an OBT but recieved a 1" as a freebie and I am loving her (hopefully)! Congrats and love the webbing she has started :)

I didn't notice until a couple minutes ago, but she's actually building a burrow under the log. She's quite the little worker. :)

Pretty cool.

Why a 10 gallon, though?

I've seen people keep an adult OBT in a fortune cookie container.

In my experience, I've noticed when they are put into a bigger enclosure, they seem more calm. Some people will say that big enclosures make T's uneasy/anxious, but my T's seem happy in their 10 gallon tanks. Plus, they seem to like to explore and walk around.

In my experience, I've noticed when they are put into a bigger enclosure, they seem more calm. Example: The person I bought the OBT from had her in a 2.5 gallon enclosure(not that there's anything wrong with that) and she was really hostile, and striking at everything. I put her in a 10 gallon and now she is really calm, especially for an OBT. Most people will say that big enclosures make T's uneasy/anxious, but my T's seem happy in their 10 gallon tanks. This is true, at least from my observations (minus that last part, I always find that a sign that they aren't satisfied with their furnishings, and/or looking for a new place to "set up shop").

In my experience, if you give a tarantula a small enclosure, the whole enclosure becomes it's burrow/territory, so it can be very defensive whenever it's home is disturbed (in this case, the whole enclosure).

Put the same tarantula in a larger enclosure, and with the right furnishings it will choose a place to build it's burrow, and will likely retreat to it with any disturbance as a first reaction instead of immediately being defensive, unless you are actually disturbing the burrow itself.

With that in mind, you can put a tarantula in a small enclosure as well and it will be calm, assuming you can find a way for it to have a percieved area of refuge, and a seperate area that isn't.

Over time, I've noticed that they will sometimes eventually take the whole large enclosure as their burrow, as they expand their hides to incorporate their surroundings.

I think that when people claim their tarantulas become "uneasy" in larger enclosures, they're just not furnishing them properly.

My Rose Hair likes to lay around different spots in her tank, but my OBT stays in her hide(during the day), until I put food in. My rosie will eat her food right where she kills it. But my OBT will come out, grab her food and go back into her hide, then when's she's done with them, she'll bring out the remains and set them next to the water dish for me to remove. :)

I just transfered my 4 OBT slings from tiny deli cups to small acrylic display cases. They may not want all the extra room they gained, but I enjoy a bit more space between them and me when I open the enclosure =/

One made a run for it during the transfer and I was sooooo glad I had the forethought to have set some things out within reach to "catch" any should they try !

They should be able to stay in their current homes for awhile thank goodness !

Pictures almost never them justice, she's a beauty!:)

I too like "bigger" cages for my scorps and T's... I'm more of a display tank kind of guy alot of times I have live planted plants and lots of decorations fitting the decor. Makes the hobby more enjoyable for me, so make these small niches of natural habitat, but it does take alot more room.

New pictures of hide. It goes about 8" deep and is completely lined with web.

She gets camera shy.

Nice. I just got an obt a couple a weeks ago. she is a little over 1" now. so decided to transfer her to a lil bigger enclouser. She def lived up to their reputation. As soon I got her in she had built a burrowed the to the bottom in a corner. I gotta say i was kinda reluctant to get an obt due to their aggressiveness and speed, but im so glad i did. She is my favorite T. Plus, i got my girlfriend to buy her for me so I could buy my King baboon. :D
