New here and what is this?

New here. I found this today. I live in the Flint Hills in Kansas and spend many hours in the field almost every day. I will be getting a more comprehensive field guide but some of the scarabs we find out here are not in the books. Here is a beetle my five year old daughter found today. It looks to be some type of predatory beetle.

What kind of habitat do these like. Supposedly they occur here(they are nationwide in distribution) but I've never seen one, or a big ground beetle, recently.

they are scrubland/forest,they are pretty hardy i keep mine a tad little on the moist side.
