Hey all!! Figured I’d post a new terrarium I’ve been working on as a display piece for my desk!
I’ve been growing quite a few small ferns and I’ve been wanting a nice display tank to bring a bit more of nature to my desk and I found this nice concave piece of wood with places for plants to grow out of it which sparked my insipiration for a living wall “Above the Forest Floor” display with some of my little epiphytic ferns that I just adore!!
The inspiration piece: May 8th:
Making the background with the piece!: May 16th:
And oooOoOo in the tank it looks so gooood!!: May 18th:
And long process finally come to fruition a few months later after the plants were propagated for the build! Exciting planting day today: August 11th: Next 4 photos)
first few ferns in!: Pictured from top to bottom Microgramma heterophylla, Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, Pyrrosia lanceolata!
And two more ferns in! : additions top left to middle Pyrrosia nummularifolia, and Microgramma vaccinifolia, plus one of my older Tillandsia ionantha sp. Guatemala clusters to bring some contrast when it’s leaves dry some!
And then todays stopping place to let it establish some before adding any finishing touches and accent sticks, wood, leaves!: one other addition is another Lemmaphyllum microphyllum bottom left and some Ficus pumila ‘Quercifolia’ floor right next to accent stone! Probably going to get some contrast color with an addition plant back right against the wall later!
Hope y’all enjoy seeing this as much as I do, (Probably Not ) but it will look really good when grown in!
I decided to use smaller sections of rooted cuttings as to be able to get plants and roots into where I wanted them to grow, over it looking super full from day one!
It’s not totally finished but I want it to establish for a few months before possibly adding some more arboreal isopods, Isopoda sp. “Capria”, or maybe….potentially a small Amblypygi. Not sure what life forms I’ll put in totally yet! I might not put any at all tho
Anyway that’s been the process of a epiphyte build so far, I’ll post updates as I take them!
Have a great day friends!
If you have any questions about the process, plants, or build don’t hesitate to ask!
