So a month or so after trading my H. laoticus I found myself missing it while looking at this sad "Asian forest scorpion" for $19.99 at a local PetsFart in a tiny kk with .5" deep sopping wet substrate, no hide except a two or three little leaves, a water dish with what looks like a ball of water crystals and bright lights beaming down on it. I ask their "specialist" if it's cb or wc and she claimed all of their scorpions are cb and all of them are female. Whatever, lie to me. I purchased it as shipping season for me is seemingly forever away and I want to build up my scorpion collection again.

Here "she" is (I'll sex it later) in the cup and in the new kk. I'll be modifying the kk's lid tonight to accommodate humidity needs.

I believe this to be a Heterometrus spinifer. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I did the same exact thing with my Heterometrus :) I think mine is a petersii but if it turns out she is a spinifer and yours is a spinifer I will happily have a trade so yours may have a friend as mine is quite lonely also.

That's a good deed you did there.
I saved this one but how many will suffer replacing this one? Bittersweet...

"she" is beautiful!
nice pick up. :)
I thought so. :D

Looks comfy!
If she survives this quarantine she'll get something even comfier. Live plants and a bigger viv. Maybe start another community.

Yours was a H. petersii. Mine has a bit of a gloss to it and a red telson which makes me think H. spinifer.

:p They can still live together without much problems though! H.spinifer sounds so dull to me while H.petersii sounds so exotic! heheh They are both exotic species anyways so I shouldn't really complain. I love how your Heterometrus looks so nice! It "she" nice at all? Mine wants to murder me.

Definitely a bit feisty. I don't blame it though, with the set up it was in, the deli cupping and rehousing and all.

Lid alterations done. Big deli containers and hot glue make for an effective and temporary fix. If you zoom in you can see "she" has already found her hide spot under the cork bark. I wonder how long it's been since she's had one..

The uncovered circular portion makes for easy water filling.

In the ocd vaseline rimmed 20 tall qt tank (in case of unseen mites upon purchase).

Nice! Man my H. still doesn't have that much a luxury as I've been trying to save money fora nice piece of cork bark or something for a hide for her. :( I think I'll make an upgrade to her enclosure today.

Hey

Beautiful scorp! Still H. petersii // H. laoticus in my opinion

19. Dorsal keels on fifth metasomal segment consist of
sparse large and pointed granules. Chela lobiform ..... 20
- Dorsal keels on fifth metasomal segment consist of
minute, less noticeable granules. Chela rounded. ..... 21
20. Dorsal surface of fingers tuberculate ............ 22
- Much of dorsal surface of fingers smooth and punctate
............... H. spinifer (Ehrenberg, 1828)
21. Male has more pronounced tooth on movable fingers
of pedipalp than female. Carapace margins often
granulate. ...................... H. petersii (Thorell, 1876)
- Movable fingers of pedipalp without noticeable sexual
dimorphism. Carapace usually smooth, without granules.
...................... H. laoticus Couzijn, 1981

Its difficult to determine what is a 'rounded' claw or a 'lobed' one based on the key. In general you'll find H.spinifer to have a yellow/red telson too

Set up looks good @shining

One of my baby P. imperators (yes, true P. imperator) ended up trying to push the lid off their enclosure last night (3 of them share an enclosure). They really are clowns.

It's definitely not a H. laoticus, too much granules on the palps, the telson is red and it has alot more hair on it than my H. lao.

H. petersii sounds likely. I'll have to run it down that checklist you provided after it settles in.

Thanks for the info.

Could be H petersii. Resembles features of mine. But a lot of the heterometrus can look quite similar to each other in features so I might be totally wrong. As far as local pet store rescues go, this is a nice looking one. A testament to the species that they're hardy little survivors!

Lol do I spy a copy of the 120 days of sodom? You degenerate you ;)

Update: It is indeed a lady. She had the most petite pectines. :)

She also got an enclosure upgrade.
20 gallon tall with live plants, more cork bark, coco fiber, Vigoro organic potting soil and springtails. The extra space is good for the size she will put on and for a potential future mate. :) Gonna have to get a closer look to get a positive id after she's settled in...again..

After acrylic paint background was applied.

That is such an amazing enclosure. I gotta upgrade mine tomorrow. I keep saying I will but I never get to it but as it will be Saturday tomorrow I will have some free time to do it. P.S. Someone remind me as I literally live on this website now. :astonished:

After seeing your fabulous setup, I can't help but think my little Marcus is a bit ripped off in the accommodation department.

OK now I feel ashamed of having my spinifer in a sterlite bin! I guess she will be getting a nice clear enclosure tomorrow haha!
