Omg I am so blown away by my newest baby. This just arrived last week as a 2i baby and was just brown similar to my other Hottentotta Tamulus. This baby just molted to 3i and I am freaking blown away🤯 I can't believe how much it changed in 1 molt. The first picture is the day I got it, the second just a week later. If I had to guess by the slimmer body this will likely be male as my other Tamulus is chunky body that will likely be female.

Probably alittle early to call. But yes, that is the basic rule of thumb. Also, in many Old World Buthids including Hottentotta males usually have larger pectines set closer together that the basal portion of their pectines can touch or even overlap each other. In females, their usually smaller pectines are set farther apart and basal portions of the pectines do not contact each other nor overlap.
