I want to ask you guys which species of tarantula do you think is most formidable and has largest prey items?
In my humble opinion Poecilotheria ornata is most formidable tarantula,my friend used to have an adult female and i remember it taking some impressive prey,he once feed her an adult chipmunk and she menaged to kill it with small difficulty. The most formidable and the largest prey items would be two different things altogether. I would say the most formidable (in my experience) is P.muticus, the King Baboon, or S.calceatum, the Featherleg Baboon. Both are quick to anger, and the KB has a nasty set of fangs that can cause a significant puncture wound. In addition, I have heard that the venom causes some form of hallucinating, as well as serious local swelling and aching. I only mention the S.cal from things I have heard, I personally have little knowledge of this species other than that it apparently is an incredibly "advanced" tarantula with a serious bite. Plenty of species can eat prey larger than themselves, but the so called "Birdeaters" would probably have the biggest prey items. Those that take lizards, snakes, frogs and mammals like Theraphosa, Pamphobeteus and Xenethsis would earn the title I guess.
An adult chipmunk is the last thing you want to be feeding your spiders. I wouldn't be surprised if in another scenario the spider was killed whilst attacking such large prey, don't forget rodents have teeth and large adults could deliver a nasty bite.In my humble opinion Poecilotheria ornata is most formidable tarantula,my friend used to have an adult female and i remember it taking some impressive prey,he once feed her an adult chipmunk and she menaged to kill it with small difficulty.
I am asking which tarantula is most formidable hunter.About chipmunk,it is dangerous prey but this taruntula dispached it quickly with a skull bite.An adult chipmunk is the last thing you want to be feeding your spiders. As far as wich species is the most "formidable" it depends on what you mean. If your thinking size Theraphosa's stump all other species. If you mean venom potency or defensive behavior there are plenty of other OW species that would merit that rank.
I agree with this but i think its kinda draw between P.rufilata and Poecilotheria ornata.I would say the top five "formidible" T's with venom in mind would be H.maculata, S.calceatum, one of the Lampropema Spp., P.muticus, or P.Ornata
Umm...?I agree with this but i think its kinda draw between P.Ornata and Poecilotheria ornata.
Sorry my bad i wanted to write Poecilotheria rufilata.Umm...?
Same species. One (P. ornata) is abbreviated, whilst the other (Poecilotheria ornata) is not.
My eight inch T.stirmi is just as fast as my eight inch P.ornata.. The stirmi lacks the same agility but it's just as fast.He did care for his tarantula but i suppose he just wanted to see some action, anyway i find Poecilotheria genus most formidable is because they are perfect mix of speed, strenght and agility, speed and agility that Theraphosa spp. lack.
Your T.stirmi might be almost as fast as an P.ornata but it still isn't as fast it also lacks agility that Poecilotheria species have.About changing friend, hes a good guy probably got really bored and wanted to see if his tarantula can eat a chipmunk. My eight inch T.stirmi is just as fast as my eight inch P.ornata.. Also you need a new friend.. That chipmunk crap is ridiculous..
He bought that chipmunk. So if I'm bored I'll just let my spider try to eat something that could be riddled with parasites and could easily use its teeth to chomp my spider in two. Pitting two animals against each other until one dies is messed up.
Ok you win, l couldn't care any less...Your T.stirmi might be almost as fast as an P.ornata but it still isn't as fast it also lacks agility that Poecilotheria species have.About changing friend, hes a good guy probably got really bored and wanted to see if his tarantula can eat a chipmunk.
We all make mistakes he only did it one time. Before anyone says anything about how feeding tarantulas is essentially pitting two animals against each other to the death, the feeders we buy for our T's are (hopefully) purchased with the understanding the spider will have little to no difficulty taking down and eating. A chipmunk was not bred to be a feeder for a spider, unlike roaches, crickets and other universal feeders. If not to mention feeding a tarantula rodents is completely unnecessary, and instead risks your pet's life
Oh, good.We all make mistakes he only did it one time.
