So it's funny it was mentioned in this thread...

http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=155446

...because my big boehmei girl decided to do it to me today.

So, in case anyone wants to know what a tarantula looks like when it's molting upright, here it is:

Here's the part where you know it's gonna molt. It sits in this position and moves its legs back and forth. That, and the abdomen looks like a deflated baloon. ;)

And the rest of it:

Yeah, I had to choose one or the other, and I don't have time-lapse capabilities, so I went with pics. ;)

Cool and interesting pics Joe. I haven't seen any of my T's molt upright yet. I'm sorta surprised, I figured she would have had a harder time pushing herself up out of the old exo rather than pushing the old exo off. I wonder why they go ahead and molt upright sometimes.

Thanks. :)

It appears she has a cyst on her abdomen. I need to take some pics. Hopefully she'll harden up alright and eat.

Her molt before this one was upright as well.

I had a B. emilia do an upright molt a couple days ago, but hers appears forced and is possibly a wet molt, but that's another story altogether. I'm keeping an eye on her and documenting things, so I might post about it in the future.

Other than that, I haven't seen any that I can recall.

An interesting thing to note, though. They don't lay down a web mat if they're going to molt upright, so it throws you off a bit.

My large B. boehmei female molted upright as well. Now I'm wondering if certain T species are more likely to molt upright...

Very good stuff. Its funny how that was just discussed here recently. I thought my female was big. Your girl makes mine look small. She is currently in premolt.

I have 2 males that are probably going to mature around the same time. If your girl is healthy and ready I may just have to send one ur way when the time is right.

Sathane, my smaller female molted 'normally'. So did my IM. He's at least 5.5" right now, and still immature. He's gonna be a monster when he hooks out!

I'll let you know, BM, but I don't think she's gonna be up for it. I'm about to go photograph that cyst; I'll post here when I do.

I'm assuming you didn't read the original thread I referenced, otherwise you would have left that part out.

That's ok, why do your research before posting.

And as far as the searching thing, sure, I could have resurrected threads from 4 or 5 years ago. Then I get flamed for that, right?

Thanks for your post, though. You sure are a wealth of knowledge.

If you hadn't noticed, I usually reference the search function when people post questions that have been asked over and over and over again. If you like, I'll start on threads where people want their spiders sexed and tell them to post in the sexing forum.

If you want to continue this, take it to PM's.

oh and if you would of searched you would of found some sideways molt threads also.

i guess if you wanna be technical you should of put this in the announcements section.

ohhhh and if you would of searched you would of noticed most upright molts do involve the making of a molt mat.

and i also like to think that i'm a wealth of knowledge. thanks for the complement.

I know they don't always molt upright but it would be interesting to see how many people have witnessed an upright molt and of what species.

It would be cool to see what exactly it is that would make it choose to molt upright. Is it a response to certain conditions - environmental, stress, etc, or is it just a random occurrence?

In your sequence it looks like your female rolled over her abdomen and onto her back to complete the molt.
My female got to about picture number 7 in your sequence then rolled onto her side to finish pulling out her legs.

Sathane, my smaller female molted 'normally'. So did my IM. He's at least 5.5" right now, and still immature. He's gonna be a monster when he hooks out!

Here's the cyst:

I wonder if it was partly to blame for the molt in general, or if it was a reason for the upright molt?

Not too sure about the latter only because she's molted upright before, but you never know.
