my guess on the white stuff could be mold, just dry out the substrate. as to the sex I think it could be female, Im still not experianced enough to say, so take it with a little bit of salt.

It looks like poop... But I have never seen it on the substrate.. Mine always poops on the side even though its a terrestrial species.

ROFL!! NICE AMOUNT OF SUBSTRATE!!! :) That made people eat their words for a second..
Ehh... I'd still add a bit more. Rule of thumb is if the front legs are touching the top, then the back legs should be touching the substrate.

That looks like poop. The pic is a bit of bad quality, and personally I don't like ventral shots since they are not 100%. But I'm thinking a female... Can you take picture of a molt? And thats more than enough substrate for the t. :)

By the water dish looks like mold, but by the tiki is poo. Get that top layer out as best you can with a spoon and let the enclosure dry out for a week or so. You may have to remove some more if it pops back up, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. It will also just go away on its own. The enclosure is rather moist for a B. smithi, so drying it out a bit will be a good thing.

For the thousandth time... mold is not dangerous. I swear, if I lay hands on whomever started this fear that mold is the number 1 killer of tarantulas...

In any case, more air flow will reduce the mold, but mold happens. You have a food source + water = mold. The only way to keep it from happening is to pre-mold your substrate (composting) or keep it bone dry, which doesn't exactly help out your molting animal, does it?

I'm not intending to start a flame on here, but ponder this for a moment... A mold that grows on an acidic plant material would infect or effect a tarantula how?

To the OP, your substrate depth is awesome, as for the rest, just relax.
