This is my girl, Moxie. Moxie was up for adoption at a local Petco through a partnership with a local rescue group. I was volunteering with the rescue group and arrived one morning to socialize with the cats, as always.
I came in with the store workers and I went straight over to clean the cat cages, feed and water everybody. Moxie was in a top cage, and a ladder had to be used to tend to the cats on the top. I pulled the ladder over, climbed up and saw one of the worst sights I had ever seen. Moxie had ripped out her spay stitches and there were intestines everywhere. Everywhere!!!
I thought she had passed, but when I reached my hand toward her head, she opened her eyes a little. I was so panicked on the inside, but I managed to put together one of those cardboard carriers that shelters use. There was no safe way to get her out of her bed, so I lifted her (bed and all) and placed her into the carrier. It was Sunday and no nearby vets were open (of course), so I drove as fast as I could to the shelter. I was on the phone with them the whole way, and they were paging one of their vets to meet me there. Halfway to the shelter, Moxie put one of her little paws through the air holes as if to tell me, "I'm still alive. I'm hanging on."
The staff told me that it didn't look good for her. I put her rabies tag around my neck and promised her that she would be my girl forever if she would keep fighting.
She did! She has no health problems resulting from the ordeal. I named her "Moxie".
Moxie: Noun. Slang. The ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage.
