Im going to get my mexican red knee today..

and i've took the temperture readings of my room.

will my red knee live at 30 degrees in the day and about 20-23 degrees in the night?

my room has an aircondition which explains the sudden drop in temperture. HELP!

30 (86) is pretty warm, but that's probably only during the hottest part of the day. Just don't put the tank in the sunlight. 20 (68) isn't too low at all. They do fine with temperature fluxuations. They experience some pretty big changes in their native habitat anyway. She'll be ok.

With a hide and a water dish a Smithi will handle upper 80's with ease. You should be just fine. :D

i think the temps need to be changed.....lol, here in the states its degrees, celsius? i think is what you meant( just messing with you.)....anyways to the question at hand... they usually like it hot but changes of 10 or more degrees shouldn't bother it...during the summer it gets pretty hot without ac and at night kinda drastic from the days, usually a 20 degree difference..and all my t's don't seem to mind(molting and eating pretty routine)...soo i wouldn't worry to much....at least not with brachys or i should say mine don't.....

cheers mates!

How bout lighting in my terrarium?( ill post pictures of my terrarium later in the day )

some told me that we should not disturb the "day-night" patterns of ALL Ts and lighting at night is a strict NO.

how true is this?

Lighting a tarantula at night isn't going to do much good. They like the dark. I like the dark. They get dark. ;)

The only thing light will do is create more heat. And since it is warm enough in the day time, more heat will just cause problems.

I wouldn't say it is strict "No" but I will say that it is not the best thing for tarantulas...

Ok I own one...

Patch is his/her name since when I got him he had a brown spot on his butt plus the have the red bands on their legs. I do not have a light on him. I don't recommend lighting him at night since these guys don't like bright lights plus like said before that will just raise the temps. I keep my house about 70-75 depends how hot it gets outside. I hate the heat myself so I keep it cool in my house. He's perfectly fine. In his cube it's about a constant 75-80 during the day and drops maybe to 70 at night. And he's perfectly happy. I also have a water dish in there that keeps the humidity level too. Here are a few pics of his home and his happy self. {D

I can deal with the smilies if he has more posts like the one he just had. He actually contributed something useful to the thread! I think I might faint.

in my experience temperature doesn't really need to be spot on. temps in my room are often not favorable but have never seemed to affect my T's. once during an ice storm we lost power for 5 days and it was near freezing in my room for much of that time and i didn't lose a single tarantula. they are tougher than i thought ;)

The biggest danger that I see with lights at night is circadian rhythms. One of the few reasons spiders still have eyes is to see when it's day and night and to match their behavior accordingly. Bright light for long durations resets the circadian cycle making the tarantulas simple brain think that it is morning. If it isn't actually day you can offset the cycle or just mess it up for a while. This is probably not too bad for T's since there are no predators and prey is always plentiful, but it's nice to think they are comfortable. It seems that T's can not see red light well (or possibly at all) so a red LED light is a good night viewing option. Incandescent and fluorescent red lights might give off small amounts of UV which is invisible to us but spiders see it pretty well. You probably don't want to throw off circadian cycles when trying to breed as many other animals don't want to breed when circadian cycles are out of whack.

The only tarantula that I'm aware of that suffers greatly from a messed up circadian rhythm at least partly from changes in lighting is the Chilean rose. At least merely as pets, other tarantulas couldn't care less. (If you want to breed them it may be an entirely different story. I won't go into that here.)

HOWEVER, having said that, only the arboreal tarantulas seem to not mind rather bright lights. All other tarantulas try to hide from them, and many simply won't thrive if kept under bright lights like terrarium lights.

If you want to keep something under lights in a terrarium I'd suggest switching to keeping reptiles. They do much better in bright light than most arachnids.
