Hello,

I started a mealworm farm for my leopard geckos and turtles. I have discovered that when the pupae turn to beetles they don't last long. They turn black and they seem to slow down. I have them in a rubbermaid with oatmeal bran, several sliced cucumbers.

What could be the reason why they are dying? I have them in my garage and it is starting to get a little cold.

They don't live long, but you want a comfortable temperature for them to breed before they die. I wouldn't suggest leaving them in an unheated garage all winter. Some of the larvae will most likely survive that, but the colony won't grow during that time.
