Mantises

What would be the best way to find mantises? Ive been checking at night into bushes and trees and have had no luck.

Not sure about the temperature in New York, but I think it is beginning to get too cold for wild mantids
Maybe you could find some online?

It depends on the species of mantis you are trying to find, but the most common ones in the United States are most easily found around sunny fields and open spaces. You're most likely to find them hiding amongst tall grass, flowers, and low shrubs with good sun exposure. It's currently a little late in the year to find mantises, but you might be able to more easily find their oothecae as plants lose their leaves.
