I saw a few of these last week on a fishing trip in Maryland. They were in tall grassy, weedy areas along the banks of the lower Susquahana river. They were about 1 1/4" long. The ones I see here in Mass look similar but are terminated the same on both ends and are longer and thinner. Anyone know what it's parents are?

Those are from the Chinese mantis egg cases. The other ones are from the Carolina mantis i think.

The oothecae you found in Maryland are more then likely the Chinese Mantis. The ones you found in Mass., according to your description of the longer thinner oothecae would probably be European Mantis. I have both here and had to research them, thats how I know the difference. I live in NH. My nymphs and oothecae of the chinese mantids are from Maryland.

Hope this helps,

Tom
