1. Handling is highly frowned upon. You're gonna catch a lot of flak.

2. There is a forum dedicated to sexing Ts.

3. Most folks rely on exuvia for sexing as ventral shots aren't particularly reliable for most species.

4. I have no clue, I'm just now learning how to sex them but looks female to my untrained eye but I really have no idea.

I'm also really bad at vent sexing but I think it's male too, I don't think I see a furrow.

Looks male. Closeness of upper booklungs and upside-down U (like mini-mountain) between the booklungs makes me think male.
Next exuvia you get -- you could verify gender.

If you're hoping for female... then I hope I'm wrong! Ventral sexing isn't as good as examining exuvia.

Nothing wrong with a quick handling pic for sexing. Its a issue if it's done regularly.

Going male. Wait for a molt. At that size it should be obvious.

I was also thinking male, but I have extremely little experience with ventral sexing.

And I know people will be giving you grief for you holding it (which is a very understandable concern, but we can't stop you, so just make sure you handle it safely), but the bigger issue would definitely be having it on your face like in your profile picture. There's no way to do that where it would ever be safe for the tarantula. It could easily die from a fall like that.

I'd rather you hold it safely in you're hands low to the ground and over something soft than have it ever be near your face. Unless you're actually laying on the ground, there's no real way to position your face a safe distance from the ground if it were to fall

I agree with you that holding like that is wrong... Pinch grab is safer than this handling method if you have good grip.. But you can't really do handling with old world tarantulas.. Only way is molt because old world likes attacking... I have a docile obt but that's the exception.. It walked on my hand when opened lid but surprisingly no bitten

My T is not at a great hight it's on the bed with me just over my belly so it would be fine

I wasted a couple minutes trying to decide which handling pix you meant: your 'gender pix' or your 'profile pix' ... before I remembered it doesn't matter which pix you meant.

I'm in the non-handling camp.
But even if I held mine all the time, I am very sure I would never risk sleeping in a bed with urticating hairs.
(And you said 'no great height' -- is your mattress on the floor???)

Not sure what more to say....

Um, nope, I got nothing.... :banghead:

Even if the mattress -is- directly on the floor, I'm sure it's not just a 1" thick mattress...or maybe it is! What do I know?

Either way...it doesn't matter how safe you try to make it for your tarantula, you can never be 100% positive nothing bad will happen unless you are a very talented ethereal being with the gift of gazing into the future. It doesn't take much of a fall at all to injure a tarantula. I've said it before, I'll say it again now and more in the future I'm quite positive-- Holding a tarantula is always something you want, and never something your tarantula wants.

You're forcing what you want onto your tarantula, rather than putting your own wants aside and doing what is the best for your tarantula.

Well I wouldn't do it regardless, but the OP's avatar pic looks to be an L.parahybana climbing on her face lol. So who knows how often she handles..

What about when you had one on your face? That's more then enough height to kill a heavy bodied terrestrial, and a very bad spot to get bit...

Just expressing some concern about your pet. Nothing wrong with that. With just those two pictures to go by and no real way to determine the height visually, you can't blame us for being worried. Just wanted to make sure you're informed of the risks.

That being said, I still personally think that might be too high. I wouldn't even hold a juvenile or larger T more than 2 - 3 inches over something extremely soft and shock absorbing.

This is beyond reason, Professional handler? What are you thinking? Theraphosids cannot be tamed like reptiles no matter how early you start handling.

Some specimens will tolerate it but they could change dispositions and turn defensive like the flip of a switch. Don't spew misinformation around, someone might bet bit because of it.
