Why do pictures posted in some threads don't show up in "Latest media"?
Feels a bit pointless to post a picture that almost no one will see because of that.

Because the "Latest Media" widget is made to only show images posted in our gallery ("Media" in the forum toolbar). Pictures attached in threads are not considered "Media" for the purpose of the "Latest Media" widget.
