Is this a good idea for getting lazy cats to move a bit or will it just result in psycho-kitties tearing up the joint?

well it does make the cats nuts.. but I find it is a good way to make bad kitties go where you want them to.

I think it's meant to attract their attention and to run after the red dot.

Jupp.. that's exactly what I had in mind for them:) Both my kitties need exercise and that little red dot drives them wild.

I once saw a video where a cat did a back flip while chasing the dot. I think this would be a good workout for them.

I don't have cats, but I usually run and wrestle my dogs. We all get a good cardio workout.

Not all cats will go after the laser pointer, just like catnip, some love it, and others dont bother with it. Just DONT point the laser at your cats eyes.

If your cat likes the laser, you need to be home to play with your cat. But if your not home and you want your cat to have some fun, your cat may like the fake furry mice, just dont get ones too small to swallow. A cat tower/scratching post will also give your cat something to do, and if your cat likes catnip, line the tower with catnip to get your cats attention. There are also window perches you can buy so your cat can look out the window at the birds.
If your home the feather teasers make a great toy for your cat to chase after as you move it.

There are even some battery operated toys for cats. One is a round toy where as your cat walks by, the motion senser detects your cat, and little mice pop in and out for a minute, getting your cats attention, and hopefully your cat will try to get the mice (they are not removable, so the cat will always be trying to get them)

Aw, man, hours and hours of fun! Two of my three cats are OBSESSED with the "red bug." All you have to do is whisper "where's the red bug?" and their ears perk up and their pupils dilate!

I found one that runs on plain old AAAs, and I hope to use it to *ahem* slim down my fat boy.

Also, our weimar/catahoula(?) mix goes absolutely nuts over it. He pounces on it like a coyote, and he actually will bite almost any surface you put the laser on....carpet, wood floor, CONCRETE! :wall: {D

Yeah, I recommend a laser pointer as good exercise for cats who like it, but you've got to pay attention to the cat and know when enough excitement is enough.

our two cats just love the red bug - they go nuts as soon as they see the laser stick in your hand. be careful where you ponit it, it may result in torn curtains {D. all in all it's the best cat toy ever and great exercise for house cats. but mind not to point it in their eyes!

And torn legs. My husband once got the cat to run up the back of my legs.   I'll repeat, he only did that one time...it only took one time for the cat to learn that particular lesson, too.

I've always said I would get Aneesa a laser, but she's so goofy... a regulation sized MagLite works just fine with her! {D
The ratties, on the other hand... now, that could prove to be fun!

thats very interesting about the rats.. I wouldnt have thought they would chase a laser! I had to take a break on the laser cause my cats would end up just sitting there all the time, laser or not, like they were on drugs lookin for the red bug! they looked like they were insane just sitting there twitchin about lookin all over the place. they dont do it anymore. but whenever I pull out my keys (where the laser is) they come running in the room and start meowing at me and lookin around on the floor.
