A female Phidippus borealis with her prey, a grasshopper.
This was taken from the wild. I came across it in my yard yesterday morning as I was mowing the lawn ( when I made a mad dash into the house for my camera!). The grasshopper, and spider, are both about 1/2" (12mm) long. This was a young grashopper, with an adult spider. A full grown grasshopper would be twice that size, so I'm not sure if the spider could take an adult. I have seen these spiders feeding on large harvestmen (Opilione), adult male wolf spiders, crab spiders, other jumping spiders, large flies, etc, so they are certainly capable of handling some tough prey.Stormcrow said:Awesome pic of salticidae predation, actually I am kinda shocked at prey item taken down, baby 'hoppers are still a strong creature. Was this a photo taken from the wild or is this a pet?
