I have four Jefferson's salamanders currently, one of which I have had for nearly 10 years now, the others between five and seven I think. I used to have spotted salamanders, both were already full grown when captured, the first lived about seven years, the other about three. We had two other jefferson's that died mysteriously.

I've had lots of people tell me they have a hard time keeping salamanders. But these are the lowest maintenance pets I have.

They are in a 20 gallon tank with dirt, moss, rocks, and pieces of bark from my backyard. They have a nice natural looking waterdish that is sloped nicely for easy access which they never really use, but we keep it filled for humidity. They loooove their frisbee. We put a big pink frisbee in there as a water dish, but they just burrow under it. They make their little tunnels and nesting spots underneath, all huddled together, it's the cutest thing!

We feed them mealworms about once a week. Usually by hand, because, well, it's fun! Whenever I lean over the tank and take away the frisbee they all look up, and sometimes even if I drop the mealworms in front of them, they'll keep looking up waiting for me to dangle one in front of them. If we leave them alone they'll still eat though, hehe. Though they will sometimes snap at eachother, start to swallow someone else's foot, or try to eat the same mealie. So I usually stick around to make sure feeding time goes smoothly.

And of course I have pictures of my darlings {D This is during bathtime, which happens periodically. I'll set up a big pan of water and let them swim around. I think this summer I'll try setting up their tank a bit nicer with perhaps a sloped watery area but I'm not sure if its necessary.

Has anyone else kept these as pets?

Very pretty. I've never heard of this species before, I really like the blue speckles. Where are these guys native at?

They're so cute!! Around here, we just have rough-skinned newts. Thousands and thousands of rough-skinned newts. But you only know about them if you go for a walk at night when it's raining. There's even a sign in one city park that says "newt crossing."

But yours are cuter!

Nice Pics.

I have not kept that particular species, but I have kept many other species of slamander and newts.

Ooo very pretty. They're supposedly in our area, but I've not seen those.

I was just given a yellow spotted Tiger Salamander and what I believe to be a Small Mouth Salamander from my dad. He was cleaning the leaves off the pool cover and found them.

I think I'm going to release the Small Mouth one, it doesn't want to eat and looks miserable after a week. As soon as the rain starts this weekend, I'll take it to the little brook that runs through the woods and release it near there.

The Tiger one on the other hand is a voracious tyke, loves to eat and is pretty cute to look at.

Its my first stint at keeping salamanders. But so far so good. Cute ain't he?

Very cool! Since you've kept them for that long you oughtta give a stab at breeding them.

Here are two newts I keep

Southern crested newt female. Hope to get in some males soon so I can breed them. Vicious little buggers and spend more of feeding time biting each other than the food, so they occasionally have chunks missing from their tails.

2 baby photos

A gold dust newt on the right, and a Chinese firebelly on the left, the Chinese firebelly is around 2 years old and the gold dust is under a year...they grow pretty slow.

Yes I've sometimes wondered about breeding them... how would I go about making the enclosure suitable for that? And well, most importantly, how can I determine if my salamanders are male/female?

I've kept fire belly newts before but not the Jefferson's salamander, They sure are cool though, I'll have to check in my area when warms up again and see if I can find some.
