My N. chromatus has a penchant for diving into her water dish when scared. The first time she did that years ago she nearly scared me to death and I scooped her out with a spoon , but she kept doing it and I learned that a tarantula can dive if she wants to. However, I think H. gigas do it best.
It’s just so funny when I started 25 years ago or so, every T in the world as we knew it would drown in the water dish lol. Crazy times. Was mind blowing to everyone once they saw one go deep in a tank and stay under for awhile them come out fine.
H. gigas was ignorantly deemed basically amphibious, but in thruth all Ts have the ability to show such behavior. Millions of years of adapting to heavy rain and/or floods maybe? They can survive on very little oxygen and sport a water repellent exo-skeleton making being submerged in water a cake walk compared to us. So to think many have died from drowning in captivity is quite laughable. More likely, they died coincidently in their waterbowl from other causes.
