Unfortunately the U.S. doesn't seem to have a lot of those, mainly because of the whole illegality thing... Check out Cornell's entomology department though, they do open house type things where they show the different invertebrates and such. You can't buy anything, though (anything alive that is) ;)

There are a few in CA, but I haven't been to them yet. The Cal Poly Insect fair sounds fun. I wish there could be more insect specific shows but the bug police like to ruin our fun sometimes :( But, we do have a few bug/tarantula clubs in my area. Maybe you can find one where you live or start one. They're a lot of fun.

There is 'The Great Insect Fair' at Penn State Main campus every year. It's in september. It's mostly for kids, but there are alot of cool displays and such there. I make it ever year, either way.

the cal poly one is great fun. it might be a bit smaller than you are visuallizing (~3-4 major live vendors, ~8-10 moderate-minor live vendors) and is mostly deadstock but it is awesome to see that many of any kind of bug ppl there.

and i don't get in trouble for playing with bugs! (at least one herp show didn't think it was as specially magical as i did and announced that all animals must stay in their purchase containers ehehhee)

i woud definitely second starting a group in your area. i would be happy to help with any new groups. i might be limited in time but my zeal is well nigh unto unlimitted. i think that my local group would probably be willing to help out however we can, too. the USA and world need more local bug groups!

Leave if you don't like it. A lack of bug shows isn't any reason to ridicule your country.

He wasnt ridiculing his country. aHe was stating his dislike for an organization that has a bit over zealous regulations and may one day destroy the hobby.

I personally dont like the USDA/APHIS either.

so... unless we find everything about a country exactly perfect we must leave? i... don't think i read that in the rules. in fact... i am pretty sure i *did* come across something about free speech. though, from current trends i might have been mistaken about that ;)

and he did say usDa if you missed that

and as far as USDA/APHIS... i see a definite need. the application of the solution has been far from perfect, though. i guess in my heart of hearts i would rather see too restrictive legislation rather than none at all, though. at least too much legislation would save native pops and we could at least see them in the wild

Please explain the "USDA", Do you mean the US Dept of Agriculture? What do they have to do with bug shows?

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I thought someone was saying the whole country sucks due to a lack of bug shows.

The USDA regulates invertebrates as potential plant pests, or as dangers to pollinators. APHIS is the branch that makes most of the crazy laws(banning AGBs and hissers among other things), they are the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Technically yes, they were banned, and then unbanned.

AFAIK it was never enforced.

they need to redo all there laws, since we know more about species now than we used to. Because i can be arrested/fined if i transported a queen ant between two states that it is native to. But i guess with all the countries money going else were, the usda/aphis doesn't have the resources to revamp the laws, so they will remain over protective. Besides, if you cant talk bad about your own country, then who can? lol.
