I'm new to the boards (1st post) as well as new to owning a scorpion. I have searched the net and boards but have been unsuccessful in finding an answer to my question. I purchased my scorpion last night and when I was placing him into his new home I noticed the lower right pincher looks broken in half. The store advised me it's about 4 months old. Will the pincher grow back as it moults or is this a permanent injury?

it will grow back (if a lil deformed) but they will have no prob chasing down prey. and if it's 4 months old (wich is small for what im guessing is an emporer scorp) you have it for another 8 years so it will right it's self out.... and im new too and made a post and forget how to make a new one can ya tell me... i am such a noob when it comes to arachnoboards lol

Thanks for the reply. I was worried he would grow up with his claw always deformed. To post a new topic all you have to do is click on the button that says "New Thread" when you enter the boards.

How's the pincher broken?! Do you have a picture?

Scorpions ARE arachnids, but they don't share Spiders' ability to re-grow legs etc. It would be interesting to see what this looks like after it molts.

Does the shop guy know when it was borned or are they just guessing ?
Or does he mean that the scorp has been with him for 4 months ?

Dont mind me asking, wats the size of it now in terms of length ?

the likelyhood of it growing back half of a finger before reaching maturity is very slim. Though they regenerate some, typically it is a very very tiny amount with each moult. if your scorpion is already four inches(the proper measurment of a scorpion if from head to tail, not including the pedipalps BTW) the chances are that it will always be missing some of it. if you are lucky, it may regrow it from a half finger to 3/4 of a finger. The good news is that this isnt going to slow your scorpion down, and he will still be perfectly capable of fending for himself. There is a good likelyhood that he was a WC specimen, as this is an injury that is particularly common on wc scorpions. Just a word of warning that im sure you already know by now, in the majority of cases dont trust pet store people to know what they are talking about when it comes to inverts, especially scorpions. Also, always ask to inspect scorpions before buying, if they will not lift up the hide, or the lid of the tank to let you examine individual specimens, then it is my personal rule that i just refuse to buy. Hope this helps, sorry about your scorp's disfigurement, but the good news is even if he doesnt grow any back, the damage is only superficial.

Regards,
John

BTW, if you look in the book "scorpions" by manny rubio (one of the better books out there for people new to the hobby) there is a set of pictures that shows an Opistothalmus spp. with the same injury as your scorpion before and after moulting)
