So the other day I finally got around to build a 2nd level for my Blue tongue skink's 40 gallon tank. Working on it wasn't hard at all and only took about half an hour but finding out what I was going to use as the floor was a little tricky since I wanted to have something thick, supportive, and easily washable (I didn't want to use wood because waste would seep in and make it quite unsanitary). It wasn't until I was chopping up some food that I realized a cutting board was exactly what I was looking for.
First I cut up a 2x6 to the tanks inner dimension and slid them in place (these wont get messy) and filled the bottom space with shredded aspen leaving 2" of space from the top. Then I cut the two boards to size and simply laid them across the 2x6 leaving about 6" on one side of his tank so he can crawl through. Finally I just wrapped a carpet around the boards which keeps them in place.
Total cost was about $40
