So, always going on about never purchasing an animal from a pet store and here I go..purchasing an animal from a pet store! *sigh*
The lil' bugger has been there for months. Hes always jammed into the same corner and I always get the urge to snag him. Well..today I did! Come to find out there are actually 2 in the cage and one was MASSIVE!!!! Aren't frogs cannibalistic, eating the smaller of their kind? The larger one was twice the size of the guy I picked up.
Anyway, I'm very happy with my pick up. Hes just so cute he melts my heart every time I check on him! Poor guy is trying to climb up the back of the display and he keeps sliding back down with chucks of moss he pulled of. Hes getting quite the work out though! =D

I'm still thinking of a name but gosh hes a cutie!!!

What do you think of the set up? Its my first froggy set up so I'm not sure if I should change anything or not.

For some reason his right eye is half white. The other one is normal. Not sure whats up with that.

Hes so cute!!!!

A picture I tried to do up a bit. Yes, i altered the colors just a tad. =P

With a dumpy, cannibalism is not unheard of. They are extremely voracious which is part of the fun for us {D . I have a dumpy at my store that I'm very very tempted to buy. He is missing part of his upper lip but he seems to have no trouble eating. The others in his cage are a little bigger so they are eating most of the food. I take mr. hairlip out to handfeed and he sure is willing to do that. He likes to sit on my neck above my collar bone {D So far I have resisted temptation! You're chipping at my willpower with these pictures!!! :wall:

I had one as a kid... awww you're making me want one again. :wall:

I told myself I wasn't gonna get anything that ate crickets.
Then I got a T... hmm seems I need more animals that eat 'bugs' so that I can start a roach colony. :?

Okay so here is an update on the Whites Tree Frog that I purchased from Petsmart. Now I remember why I don't purchase from pet stores..I'm almost 100% sure that he is blind in his left eye. You can pretty much see for your self from the close up of his eye. I'm going to call in tomorrow and complain about it. I'm not giving him back but I'm going to let them know that I was NOT satisfied with the health of the animal.

On the plus side, I have named him Sir Humphrey. =D Here are a few updated pics. He hasnt eaten yet as far as i know but maybe he did. About 5min after I let out a couple crickets in his tank, he started going on the prowl so we'll see!

(I'm going to have to fix up a couple of these pics to look nice =D.)

How is that PetSmart's fault? He was probably blind when shipped to him and unfortunately PetSmart can't ship it back. They probably didn't realize or have the knowledge to know it was blind. If they did, they probably would have put it up for adoption if they were a responsible store like mine is.

Well it is Petsmart's fault. Reguardless of whether they realized it or not, its their business to know the condition of the animals they sell.

Reguardless, I called and informed them of the problem. The lady was very upset that he was sold in this condition. I told them I didn't want to trade him in but I did want to inform them of his condition. They asked that I bring him in along with the pictures to show the manager and I agreed.

Cute new frog! But I must voice a concern in addition to the probable blindness. In the photos, both eyes show cloudiness. This can stem from a variety of conditions, but I would monitor the animal for signs of bacterial infection and malnutrition in particular. Make sure the eyes are not bulging, runny, etc. and that the cloudiness does not increase or change in quality. Hopefully he simply has a vision problem from a past health condition or the breeder/store husbandry that can be managed easily, but definitely watch him keenly.

And I agree with Lucara; it IS the store's responsibility to monitor the health and wellbeing of live animals that they sell. Yes, the breeder may have shipped the animal in that condition, but the store should have employees competant to recognize the problem, and also NOT offer a defective animal for sale (particularly not at full price). No one would question the OP complaining if she received a broken or defective product, even though the source of the problem may be the distributor or shipper. When you commodify animals, the same rules apply: the store was in the wrong for selling an animal in this condition.

I didn't say the store shouldn't take responsibility but also keep in mind that these pet stores often have kids fresh out of high school working there. There are going to be incompetent/naive people in every workplace on the planet. However, dumping the blindness entirely on the shoulders of the store is unfair. I also said they should have offered it up for adoption if it was realized and if the store is run under good management they will refund the money (though they will probably have to get their contracted vet to check the frog) and you can fill out adoption paperwork. It's a risk you take from buying at a store contracted with certain vendors.

Well I brought the lil' bugger back to Petsmart for the manager to see but she was on break. The lady I spoke to couldn't give two toots as to what is wrong with the frog and I wasn't going to wait around for an hour for the manager to get back.

Anyway, my evil boyfriend convinced me to pick up the other dumpies while I was there..so heres the big boy!!!

My wee wittow baby. Hes such a sweetheart. Once hes on your hand, he really doesn't want to leave. Lol

The new big boy!

Those are the only pics I could grab of him. Hes somewhere hidden in the back of the tank right now. I think he has himself confused with a pacman. =P

Very nice Lucara. By the way, my posts weren't directed to you specifically. I'm just getting irritated at the "pet stores are evil" mentality when there are just as many bad breeders as bad pet stores and multiple parties responsibility should fall to.

Are you going to go back to see the manager about the first frog? I'm sorry your experience wasn't great. Ask to speak to the Pet Care Manager but call ahead of time to make sure they are working that day(the other managers won't know what the heck to do) otherwise you can make a customer complaint to corporate which they take very seriously. We had an inspection done because a customer complained thinking we weren't feeding the bettas enough. (We were but the employee gave misinformation and told her we only feed once a week :? )

i went to petsmart today to get crickets, they had just gotten a frog (i think it was a pacman or dumpy), couldn't see it good, they had it in a delicup, hey wouldn't sell it either since one of the salesclerks noticed something wrong with a leg while feeding it. but with those pic's i think i want one now.
