I'm not enough of a beetle expert to narrow it down to species or even genus, but a couple of families come to mind...
Cantharidae, the soldier beetles. Usually, with this family the elytra (wing casing) is sort of loose and the abdomen will stick out beyond the end of it.
Cerambycidae, the long-horned beetles. Elytra much thicker and tighter. The sounds you described are like the sounds I've heard them make when picked up.
