ID Spider Please. :)

This is a harmless male hacklemesh weaver, Callobius sp. (Amaurobiidae), out looking for a female. There are five species in BC, but I'm not sure which ones are found in the Vancouver area. Determining the species is difficult because they tend to look alike, so you'd need to examine the palps on this one to ID it any further.

Here is a page showing 3 of the 5 species in BC (C. bennetti, also shown on this page, is not one of the five). It'll give you an idea of how closely they resemble each other:

my first thought was Amaurobiidae, too

they are among the more scary looking harmless spiders, imo =P

it seems like a lot of times their fang parts and head are colored differently than their body to kind of draw attention to their bitey bits :)
