I want to start keeping hissers, but my mum is afraid of them getting out into the house and infesting it. I've always been interested in them I've just never been able to find any where I live in TN. I looked it up, and there's another obstacle, legislation! It's illegal to have hissers in TN and I'm now very, very frustrated. What am I to do?

Are you sure? I dont find anything that shows them to be illegal in any state. Also, hissers will not infest a home. They are not a pest specie and cannot survive roaming free....they require a small amount of care to support a colony.

N/m about the legality, I read it again and it said it's unlawful to ship them into TN without a lisence but It also said the lisence isn't required to possess them. Weird, huh?

Best argument I have against hissers infesting: I was keeping 4 in a fairly large KK after they wouldn't make me babies. They kind of became a backshelf pet. Well one day as I woke up for school I decided to check everyone out and make sure they all had food. I pulled out the hisser tank and what did I discover? About 40 little babies scurrying around the container. The holes at the top were big enough for them to escape but I didn't find any around the shelf or even outside the container. I absolutly adore my hissers now. Easy way to keep them from escaping is put a little petroleum jelly around the top, that's what I use and have yet to have an escapee from the tank. The only time one was out of the container is when I thought I had a piece of bark completely free of roach babies and it was safe to leave out on a shelf. By the time I found him it was nearly dead since mine don't seem to live well in my house. I decided to just feed him to a baby T in the end.

Hisser cannot infest, it's nearly impossible.

Which law are you talking about? I am unaware of any laws concerning shipping roaches to TN. My brother lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and we are always shipping stuff to and from.

There are many states with regulations concerning interstate transfer of invertebrates. There are also Federal regulations that require obtaining permits for interestate transfer, but the are far from clear as to where they apply. Check with your states department of Agriculture and the state Fish and Wildlife office - all online - for reference. There are loads of people who do not check on these and ship anyway. Almost every day.

i ship alot of roaches

i ship roaches at least twice a month and even tell the post office what is in box, someone pointed out i should not do that because it is illegal,i asked they said they'd never heard they were illegal to ship.so i still ship, they even make fun when i hand them a box,and joke if it is roach, scorp, pede,or tarantula.so maybe it is different at each post office,i do live in a fairly small town

It's probably a bad influence or whatever, but it works. Just buy them and then show her later. Just keep them under the bed or in the closet or something. I mean, roaches aren't like dogs ya' know; she ain't gonna notice them barking and they don't smell, so unless she rummages through your room on a regular basis I don't see how she'd find out... unless shes telepathic, in which case disregard my statement :D If worse comes to worse and she actually makes you get rid of them, at least you'll have some free food for t's or scorps or whatever, right? ;)

I would get dubia or another nonclimber. Hissers do like to escape. Its true they don't last long...but they can get you in trouble in the few weeks or so they survive by finding themselves the cutest hiding places(like in a family member's slipper).
