I keep Androctonus on solid sand with a solitary flat stone on the warmer side and one on the cooler side. They are kept in sexed pairs at all times, but most of the people I have spoken with have seemingly not had very much success doing so, so you have been warned in advance of any attempts. No, I have not lost any Androctonus through keeping them in sexed pairs and have been doing so since the first pair I owned, but my advisory is there.

adios,

I've got a few of these, and can tell you what my setups are like. I'm not an expert or anything, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
All of my guys are in plastic 'Rubbermaid' type containers. How big a container depends on the size of the animal. Most of my containers are about 1 foot long by maybe 5 inches wide and 4 inches high. All have snap-top lids to prevent escapes.
For ventilation I've drilled a row of holes across each of the 4 sides of the containers, right above the lids.

For substrate I use a 40/60 'cactus mix' (high-grade potting soil you can find in any garden store)/desert sand blend. I use Zoo-Med's "Repti-Sand" which can be found in many pet stores.
What you get when you mix the soil and sand together is a substrate that feels and looks pretty much just like sand, but is 'firm' enough to support burrowing.
I've tried a few different mixes, and like this one the best.

Other than this, I just put a little plastic cap in each container for water, and an upside down plastic "flower pot"-esque thing (I know, I should be a professional writer with descriptive skills like these) with a cut out 'door' which the scorpions use as a hiding place.

I'd also seriously recommend getting a pair of very strong gloves, just in case.

PS: As far as heating/light goes: I live in New England where it gets pretty cold, and I've never used any type of heat source. Never needed to. As long as you don't put the scorpions in the garage or basement on a cold winter night or something, you should be fine.
