I hate asking for ID from a bad pic but....

A friend of mine in Pennsylvania was curious about this critter she rescued from drowning in a 10 gallon fishtank sat outside. I realise these are craptastic shots and I've asked for better but at the moment this is all i have. According to her the little guy is about 1cm length.

I realize there's little hope for a positive ID from that, but any suggestions would be welcome, as I'm not that familiar with beetle species.

Looks like a Male Rhinocerous beetle...Sorry, don't know the latin They are really cool little beetles. The ones in Pa do't get huge, but they are neat!

yeah, the first kinda looks like a rhino of some species, but like you mentioned, the pics aren't good quality, so it's hard to tell.

try googling it, you'll probably find it pretty fast.

I thought Rhino myself but all the hits I was getting kept referring to Aussie species, didn't know if we actually get the "real" kind up here

aussie species??? try in the genus Dynastes. can't tell from the pic, but that's what the american rhinos (some) are in.

Dynastes...That's it! Like I said earlier, they don't get "huge" here in Pa, but nonetheless it's a Rhino...
